This year for my 25th birthday, I don’t want any presents, money or really anything. This year I want to contribute to something other than myself.
...and who am I?
My name is Emma Ohlsson and I'm from Sweden. I have always had a huge passion for helping others and a dream of making a change in the world.
One year ago, while doing volounteer work in Zimbabwer, I met a lovely Australian couple who was there doing a fantastic charity project which got me inspired. They drilled boreholes in some villages around Africa to provide people with clean water and a healthy life.
Danielle and Michael started Opportunities for Life in 2013 and since then it has grown from a fresh idea to becoming a tax-deductible registered Australian Charity.
With a dream of living in a world where everyone has clean accessible water, so far they have helped over 12,000 people in Africa by providing life changing clean water solutions.
This year they are doing a project in India.
India’s biggest problem is with water filtration & distribution – both are HUGE problems. In most areas there is plenty of water however its incredibly unclean, untreated and often green.
I have myself been to India this year and seen the problems people are facing everyday. People sometimes have to walk long distances with heavy buckets and despite the effort have no choice but to drink this unclean water which is making them sick.
Groundwater is becoming increasingly polluted too so many people who have boreholes are unable to even drink that water! India is also using too much ground water through all of their boreholes so we don’t want to add to their problem by drilling more, so we are going to focus on installing filtration systems and using the water they already have access to.
We have 2 options which we are looking at. The first is reverse osmosis. This would be a community project where people will pay 2 rupees for 20 liters. By having them pay money it makes them accountable for their water usage because that is also another big problem in India, lack of education about sustainability & conservation. This system would be run on Solar Power to reduce running costs & it’s better for the environment. In total the RO system + the cost of the construction of the building + Solar Power will be approximately $10,000.
The other option we are looking at doing is Bio Sand Filters in each house hold. People will collect their water from the government taps and put the bucket into the filter in their own home. This option will cost approximately $60 per house hold, and we will get the home owners to contribute $5, again to instill ownership & a sense of responsibility. We have 6 villages in total which we are going to provide drinking water solutions, in total approximately 20,000 people will benefit from the projects.
I want to help OFL by donating a start to this project for them so that they can provide clean water to India as soon as apossible. Every day is counting to save lives with clean water!
What I love the most about OFL charity is that 100% of Public donations go directly towards funding the projects which means that you are making a difference to someone’s life regardless of the amount of money donated.
So by donating to this fundraiser, you can be sure that all of the money will go straight to the project and helping the people in India ❤️
