Operation Washington DC

Tax deductible
Participants of the Africentric Rites of Passage (ROP) Desert Region, have come together as a group of brothers and decided to make an extraordinary, life changing journey to Washington D.C. upon graduating from the program in June 2018. On this excursion of discovery and exploration the participants will visit the Martin Luther King Jr. Monument, the newly erect African American Smithsonian Museum, Frederick Douglass National Historic Site, the US Treasury Building, Lincoln Memorial, and the Historically Black University of “Howard University”

ROP is culturally rich in African American history, and tradition.  ROP is an evidence based program which presumes that if African American boy comes into knowledge of their culture and history they will begin to develop a greater sense of self worth, an appreciation for contributions made by their ancestors, a higher level of self esteem within themselves as well as their own talents and abilities. Essentially this will begin to cultivate and develop more respectful behaviors, along with better school performance and pride in their culture.

In order that our participants are able to connect with the beauty of their history, future, and themselves, we believe that it is important for them to experience the rich culture for which they have studied over the last nine months.  In addition to visiting the African-American (historical sites) of Washington D.C., our participants will additionally visit Howard University, where they will have an opportunity to tour the campus, and learn of the amazingly rich academic possibilities that lay before them. Touring Howard University is intended to unveil our African American boys to the many opportunities afforded to them by the pursuit of a quality college education.  It is through interaction with college students and touring the university campus that our boys are better able to envision themselves as actual college students; a possibility that many of our boys rarely ever contemplate.

Our youth will receive a great benefit from this life changing experience, as we aspire to return these young men back to the Coachella Valley highly motivated, confident in them selves and with a new outlook on life, which consequently is the ultimate goal of the program overall. In addition to learning about their heritage and culture youth will be provided consultation to help eliminate and manage personal anxiety; associated with traveling, such as fear of flying, being separated from family, and even the fear of traveling to unfamiliar places.

The group is planning to spend seven wonderful days in the heart of Washington DC. We are scheduled to depart on June 24, 2018 and return on July 01, 2018. Rites of Passage is funded by Riverside University Health Systems Behavioral Health, but unfortunately there are no provisions in the funding for which the organization receives for program that can be used to aid this project. Consequently, all funding for the excursion must be generated through fundraising appeals. The estimated cost per participant is $1,500.00 and each participant is responsible for fundraising either by participating in the fundraising activities or by conducting independent fundraisers.  Sadly, not every participant has the support they deserve outside of the program itself in order to reach their goal of raising $1,500; therefore we are seeking the help and support of the community. Invest in the future by investing in these young men; whom are worthy, valuable and ever so deserving.
