Operation Shanti: Feed our Brothers and Sisters

Tax deductible
Want to join me in making a difference?

My name is Stan Woodman and I live in Wilton, CT.   I'm raising money to benefit Operation Shanti, and any donation will help make an impact and help our little Brothers and Sisters have food to eat during the Covid-19 Lockdown in Mysore, India. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me.

I have personally spent many hours at Operation Shanti playing with these kids and I deeply believe in and support this organization.  I am continually fundraising and coming up with ideas so support them, I need your help!

Donate through GoFundMe to attend our Zoom Yoga Benefit Class on Sunday, May 3rd from 9-10:30am Eastern Standard Time (New York City time).

The children at Operation Shanti will be Zooming in on the Benefit Class as well, a very special time to connect with them.

Contact me for details at All Things Ashtanga Website.

A message from the CFO:

"The kids are good so far, we implemented some changes at KM to keep them safer. No visitors, no going out, and only the cook comes and goes (disinfecting herself when arriving), all deliveries are cleaned first... They're keeping busy with their regular schedule, and the older kids from college are tutoring the younger ones, teaching karate and yoga and fitness, so that keeps things interesting!

We'd use funds for groceries, which are a bit more difficult to come by especially in our quantities, so we kind of have to take what we can get - rice, lentils, milk in particular are what we'd use funds for right now. Thanks so much in advance for hosting a virtual fundraiser!"

Operation Shanti Mission
Every day we provide essential human services--food, shelter, educational and medical assistance--because only after their basic needs are met can the destitute begin to help themselves.

Karunya Mane opened on February 10, 2008. We presently house over 45 children.

At Karunya Mane, our once destitute kids get everything a child in a middle-class family gets:

- The chance to be kids and enjoy their childhood years.
- Quality private school education and daily after-school tutoring, including attendance in alternative schooling for children with special needs.
- Medical and dental attention for all healthcare issues.
-Counseling and psychological support for mental health and emotional issues.
-Nutritious meals, including milk and dietary supplements (e.g., vitamins).
-Appropriate clothing, footwear, and personal supplies, including school uniforms, haircuts and comfortable bedding.
-Interaction with other members of society through our volunteer-run programs, which include arts and crafts, singing and chanting, and drama and dance lessons.
- Morning fitness, yoga, and karate classes

From Operation Shanti Website

Our History
Operation Shanti, a San Francisco, California-based nonprofit, was formally established in 2005 to help the poorest and neediest gain status and their rightful place in their societies.

Operation Shanti's first efforts in India were organized around helping families who were living on the streets of Mysore. Assistance was focused on basic needs – food and medical care. On a daily basis, Operation Shanti volunteers provided meals and medical assistance to those living on the street. This became Project Street.

Over the next two years, Operation Shanti began to provide housing and financial support for families, and educational opportunities for children so that they could go to school rather than work or beg in the streets. In 2006 and 2007, Operation Shanti placed several of the street children in a locally respected boarding school, getting them off the street.

In 2008, Operation Shanti opened the Karunya Mane shelter on the outskirts of Mysore to provide the street children with a permanent shelter. At their choice, many of the children who had previously been placed in local boarding schools came to live at Karunya Mane. The children live at Karunya Mane seven days a week and attend schools near the shelter. Other children have been placed at locally respected boarding schools. This is our Project Home.

In September of 2009, Operation Shanti began distributing care packages to destitute families affected by medical hardship, in what became Project Food & More.

Operation Shanti's future goals include the purchase of land and construction of a larger children's home near the Karunya Mane facility to assist more destitute kids who deserve a better life.

From its inception, Operation Shanti has partnered with locals working in the nonprofit sector in Mysore, including Swamiji of Cave Shiva Temple. Swamiji and other Indian locals make up the Indian board of directors, which advises and assists Operation Shanti on its local operations. An American board of directors focuses on fund raising and provides legal and administrative support for Operation Shanti.

How We Conduct Ourselves

Operation Shanti...

- Believes that every human life is of equal value. We do not accept discrimination in any form.
- Treats everyone we work with and help as we would want to be treated.
- Gives a hungry person only food that we ourselves would also eat.
- Gives our employees and volunteers tasks that only we ourselves would also do.
- Refrains from imposing our belief systems on others.
- Takes action that reflects the long-term nature of our commitment.
- Is open-minded to change, improvement, innovation, and traditions that work.
- Takes responsibility for our actions, no matter what the consequences.
