Queridos amigos, me gustaría estar escribiéndoles para decirles que Gerry ya fue operado y que está de regreso en casa. Sin embargo, ocurrió un hallazgo inesperado en los primeros minutos de la operación, hace dos días. La cirugía no pudo tener lugar y se plantea un nuevo panorama en el tratamiento de Gerry. Se debe descartar la posibilidad de un cáncer de colon y por ello se avecinan gastos considerables. Relanzamos la campaña agradeciendo de nuevo todo el apoyo que puedan brindarle a nuestro maestro, de quien tanto hemos recibido y que ahora nos necesita.

Dear friends, I wish the subject to this update was to inform you that Gerry's operation was a success and that he's back home, but it's sadly not the case. There was an unexpected find during the first minutes of the operation, two days ago. The surgery did not take place and we've been presented with a new panorama on Gerry's treatment. We have to discard the possibility of colon cancer and for this reason there will be considerate costs to cover. We're relaunching the campaign thanking you all again for any support you can give to the maestro who has given us so much and who now needs us.

Si hoy en día podemos hablar de “jazz venezolano” es gracias a que Gerry Weil descubrió este país en 1957, se enamoró de él y se hizo venezolano por voluntad. Ha dedicado su vida a comprender la música para enseñarla a otros. Con pasión y sabiduría durante 50 años de docencia musical ha formado a 4 generaciones de compositores e instrumentistas, muchos de ellos con destacadas carreras internacionales.
A sus 77 años goza de buena salud, pero en una conversación reciente me mencionó que será necesario hacerle una cirugía de las vías digestivas. Debido a la crisis en Venezuela, sus alumnos no han podido asistir regularmente a las clases. A esto se suma la dificultad de conseguir medicamentos y costear los tratamientos necesarios.
Soy uno de tantos músicos que han tenido el privilegio de formarse con Gerry. Mi inmensa gratitud va más allá de lo que me ha enseñado en materia de armonía y composición. Gerry ha sido, para todos sus alumnos, un maestro de vida. Por eso estoy seguro de que muchos de nosotros estamos dispuestos a apoyarlo y levantar los fondos que necesita para operarse: el equivalente a 3.000 euros (3.300 dólares), que serían transferidos a su cuenta. 2.500€ serían destinados a la intervención quirúrjica, honorarios médicos y hospitalización; 500€ para terapias y tratamientos post-operatorios. Se trata de una cifra fácil de alcanzar entre los muchos alumnos y colegas que tanto le debemos a este maestro, no solo por lo que nos enseñó sino por todo lo que le ha dado a Venezuela.
Gerry está lleno de vida y de música. Cada día de salud, paz y bienestar que le ayudemos a tener, él seguirá convirtiéndolo en arte y en entrega, en compromiso y en belleza, puesto que esa es su forma de vivir.

If today we can speak about “venezuelan jazz” it’s thanks to Gerry Weil. He discovered this country in 1957, fell in love with it and became a Venezuelan by choice. He’s devoted his life to the comprehension of music, in other to share it with those around him. With passion and wisdom, he’s spent 50 years dedicated to teaching music, and he has formed four generations of composers and interpreters, many of whom have reached international success.
In his 77 years of age, he’s in good health, but in a recent conversation he mentioned that he would require gastrointestinal surgery. Due to the current crisis in Venezuela, his students haven’t been able to regularly assist to his classes. In addition to this, there’s the struggles surrounding the medicine shortages and the difficulties to afford the necessary treatments.
I am one of countless musicians who has had the privilege of studying with Gerry. My immense gratitude exceeds all that he taught me on harmony and composition. Gerry has been, for all of his students, a master of life itself. I am sure that many of us will show our support, raising the amount he needs to cover his surgery: the equivalent of 3.000 euros (3.300 dollars), that would be transferred to his account. 2.500€
destined for the surgical intervention, medical honoraries and hospitalization; 500€ for therapy and post-operatory treatments.This goal should be easy to achieve between the myriad of colleagues and students who owe so much to this great master, who has given so much to us and to Venezuela.
Gerry is full of life and music. Every day of peace, health and wellbeing that we can assure for him, he will continue to transform them in art, compromise and beauty, for this is his way of life.
