"The ancient forest shows its resilience in this picture, but our homes unfortunately did not. Jawbone Flats is a unique place that we all moved our lives to, invested our souls into, and transformed from. Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center, or Jawbone Flats, is an important liaison between humans and the conservation Opal Creek/Bull of the Woods Wilderness, which comprises the largest adjacent area of low-elevation old growth left in Oregon.
Due to the recent fires, our ten staff that both lived and worked at Jawbone Flats were all evacuated, leaving behind our home, and for some, jobs and possessions. Without a doubt, this has been a difficult and exhausting year on us. We (the staff) fed each other, fixed each other's cabins, learned from each other, and shared our lives with one another. We ran the many programs at Jawbone Flats that offer ecological education, community, relaxation, and wilderness exploration. This wildfire has devastated us and taken away our sense of security. We have been fortunate enough to have people open their homes and backyards during these strange times, as we try to figure out a different future.
Collectively we are asking from anyone who can help. The money will be split between the staff and will dramatically change our trajectory from spiraling down, to stepping forward and up. This year has been difficult on so many, and this ask is hard for us to do, but we must.
Thank you to all of you that see, love, and understand the lifestyles we have chosen to live. We will all continue paying our respects to the land, where ever we are, and opportunities that are presented to us.
Thank you,
The Opal Creek Staff"
***All the money raised will go directly to helping the Opal Creek staff with urgent needs in the wake of their displacement. Any help is appreciated over the next few weeks, and we value any assistance given. If you are someone you know is aware of any potential job opportunities, please leave your contact information in the comments below.
Thank you,
