Elysia's Diabetic Service Dog

Elysia, our precious, beautiful, 7 year old baby girl was just 3 when she was diagnosed with type one diabetes.  Her life was forever changed. Living with type 1 diabetes at such a young age has given her a new type of normalcy. Her normal is pricking her fingers and  checking her blood sugars before she eats, 2 hours after she eats and at 2:00 a.m. in the morning every morning. Also, any time we feel she is having a fluctuation in her blood sugar. She has many high blood sugars and many very low blood sugars which take it's toll on her tiny little body. Through all her trials our baby girl is full of life and is always, always, always, smiling. She is a miracle! She has always been so resilient, and for that I thank God everyday.  Her faith at such a young age amazes me, and is something that we should strive for daily.  Recently, in December of 2014 two days before Christmas her life was once again changed. Elysia had a seizure during which I watched my baby girl become rigid, stop breathing, turn blue, and collapse in front of me. I spoke life over her body and claimed God's promises over her limp body. I am a RN,and in the midst of that horror I was able to draw strength from my training,  I gave her 3 rescue breaths and I watched as life was restored to her .  After her seizure, she was completely blind for several hours and once again I prayed over her. I prayed that her vision would be restored, and God restored her sight. She has had two more seizures in just 2 short months.  There are many things that can trigger seizure activity and sometimes it can merely be a fluke or an isolated occurence, but for her it was something different. She has abnormal brain activity in bilateral back lobes of her brain. She was diagnosed with new onset seizures, and is now on seizure medication. We are having to increase her medication according to her seizure activity which also affects how she feels. Her father and I truly believe that a diabetic service dog would change her life and ours. These dogs can alert to a blood sugar greater than 200 and less than 100. These fluctuations in her blood sugars can be dangerous to Elysia and can trigger a seizure. A service dog can also alert to seizure activity 10-20 minutes before a seizure which could give  us time to make sure her environment is safe should a seizure occur.  These dogs are highly trained and are very expensive. Diabetic alert Dogs of America gurantee the service dog for the lifetime of the dog and will retrain the dog each time Elysia's blood sugar parameters change.  Her father and I believe that a service dog has the potential to change her life and aide in her care at home and at school.  As we pray and stand on God's word for her healing; Please, Please,Please, help us give Elysia this support. We believe it can give her a  normalcy she doesn't have without it. Also, we believe this could give her comfort and a sense of security as she struggles with her health daily.
