Ongoing expenses from Jades Transplant #2
Donation protected
This write up is from the coin jars etc in various places around Fredericton:
This is 28 year old Jade Cooper, from Burton. In 2016 she had a double lung transplant due to Cystic Fibrosis. Unfortunately, she went into organ rejection and in March of 2021 she had a second double lung transplant. This time the transplant is was extremely difficult; it took 25 hours for the operation, 42 liters of blood, and 3 emergent trips back to the OR within the first 2 weeks post surgery. She remained in the ICU for almost 4 months before she was finally able to return to her Toronto apartment before moving back to Burton in August 2021.
Since then, Jade and her husband have had to return to Toronto for emergencies 6 times, for several weeks each time, 2 of those times she was on a ventilator for multiple weeks, and even had to be air-lifted to Toronto in December after catching a lung infection that shut her kidneys down.
Jade's husband, Ben, has been by her side for 10 years. When she is sick and needing to go back to Toronto to be hospitalized, Ben has to work remotely or take time off work often to be with her. The expenses that come with this are HUGE, and there is not much help from the government (been denied disability assistance dozens of times even after several appeals, no accommodation reimbursement from Medicare if Jade is admitted). A 1-week hotel stay in Toronto typically costs $1200-$1800 depending on the time of year. And yes, that is with the medical rate reduction. Her hospitalization in December cost almost $8000 for the hotel, food, travel, and non-prescription medications. They have been trying hard to catch up on that debt, but they have since had to go back to Toronto 4 times, causing a snowball of expenses.
Any donation made helps. Feel free to share.
