Jerry Jeff Walker, born Ronald Clyde Crosby on March 16, 1942, Oneonta, New York, United States, died on October 23, 2020. He was an American country music singer and songwriter. He was best known for writing "Mr. Bojangles".
I was raised in Oneonta, and was a local radio personality for over 30 years. I have had the opportunity to work with Jerry Jeff, interview him, and perform his music on many occasions. Oneonta residents are proud of Jerry Jeff, and I want his legacy to live on.
I’ve worked for years to get Oneonta to do something to honor Jerry Jeff Walker. I approached every administration about it, most recently Mayor Herzig. Over the years, I spoke with Jerry Jeff and his wife Susan about it. I have emails from them, and spoke on the phone with them. Years ago Jerry Jeff said he would come up and play a show to help raise money. During my latest attempt, Mayor Herzig liked the idea. He told me that Oneonta was thinking of putting a permanent type bandstand in Muller Plaza, and we could name it in honor of Jerry Jeff. The only problem was the city didn’t have the money in its budget. I think that would be a perfect way to honor Jerry Jeff. Mayor Herzig told me it would cost around $20,000.00. I’ll keep working on something to honor Jerry Jeff. Other villages, towns and cities honor their local hero’s....why not Oneonta? :-)
Update: A city councilman has reached out to me, and a meeting date is being set up. I've also been contacted by a local radio station for an interview.
