One With Mexico

As many of you know Gabriella and I will be going to Mexico in two weeks to visit family and experience other parts of my country. We decided to take advantage of this trip to reach out to some of the victims of the devastating earthquake that occurred last September. The quake was huge 7.1 magnitude shake. It affected three states, 370 people were reported killed and over 6,000 people injured.
Now about 100 days later the country is still in various stages of rebuild. There are countless people whom months later are still homeless and have resorted to sleep under tarps. Initially there was an outpouring of support from citizens from around the world. However, apparently, most of the funds were distributed to larger cities like the capital of Mexico and several more rural towns are still waiting for help.
Further, as time passes less support is being given. Some of this is due to the fact that our daily lives take over and some people lost their trust in the institutions that were distributing the donations, some of it is governmental red-tape. In the meantime people are still waiting for help. In our research we’ve heard about several elder grandmothers who have been left with no resources and collapsed houses. They are women whose family left to find work in the states. There is a single mother, who on top of the devastation of the earthquake is also struggling to get medical treatment for her cancer. There is also need for basic things like bug spray, blankets, tarps and rope.
Most of all people need brick and mortars. This earthquake leveled over 40 city buildings, you know this is nothing compared to the many many adobe homes that were disintegrated and the displacement that followed. To this day families and elders are sleeping under tarps. We have been fortunate enough to find a great grass root organization who have taken it upon themselves to help these communities by building houses out of used pallets and adobe.
Our plan is to drive a rental from Guadalajara, Jalisco where our family is, toward the states of Morelos, Puebla and to the Federal District of Mexico (Mexico City) . The driving part alone is about 18 hours round-trip. We are taking supplies, clothes, blankets and food to the people. We have to do what we can to help. We are in touch with local groups working in the most affected and less assisted areas and in the indigenous populated areas so we can map out our journey and have people to meet when we arrive. We need your support, your prayers and resources in order to answer this very important call. We can only take so much additional luggage on the plane; however, we graciously accept your donations no matter how big or small.
With monetary donations we will be able to make purchases in Guadalajara and the money will go a lot farther in value. Your monetary donations will help us pay for these much needed supplies and also help offset our costs for gas, taxis and luggage surcharges.

We have reached out to a collective of young construction workers and activists who are rebuilding houses in these communities and tending to the people. It wasn’t their job, but you know when something is yours to do. They are functioning on volunteers and donations and not corporate or governmental support and have taken it upon themselves to help these communities by delivering supplies and food and building houses out of used pallets and adobe.
Given their efficient use of volunteers and hard work they can build a home for a family of three in less than 2 weeks for less than $1,000. If you are in a position to contribute at this level, we invite you to do so. We plan to meet with these angels and find a way to bridge them to more resources so that they can continue doing God’s work.
