We have some brush piles left from a blessed soul who trimmed some trees and bushes in our yard. My son started to run them through the chipper last Wednesday, and it quit. It will cost about $130 to replace it. It would be nice to have someone come help with this task.
Later that day, when he went downstairs to do laundry, he found water dripping from the laundry room ceiling. The dishwasher decided to leak all over the kitchen floor and into the laundry room. Maytag scheduled the repairman out a week, then let me know it will cost $98 just for him to look at it and diagnose. If it is not a warranty issue, parts and labor go on top of that.
When we were cleaning up from the dishwasher incident, we found out that the plumbing under the kitchen sink is leaking as well. Time to call a plumber to get it all fixed properly.
The next day, I lost the contact lens from my good eye. It will be a week or two, and about a hundred dollars, before I can get the replacement.
I tutor online, so the missing lens is complicating that process. I got a special large monitor to accommodate my vision limitations, but without that lens, I cannot see the screen clearly and still be on camera. I put the lens from the other eye in. It is much stronger. Things are still a bit blurry, but I can limp through my classes.
I was commissioned to teach some special classes at my online tutoring job. For one of the classes, I needed a family picture, which is packed away in the downstairs closet. When my son went down to retrieve it, he found the john squirting water out of its top. We got a replacement fill kit for him to remedy it, but the bolts attaching the old apparatus are jammed so he cannot finish it.
On Monday, I had a full schedule of classes. After those finished, I checked my schedule in case I got a short notice booking. Apparently, I did, but it did not appear on my schedule for some reason. Now, I find it will be fined for not showing up. The fine is more than what I might have been paid for the class. :(
Plumbers arrived on Wednesday.
They replaced the kitchen faucet and the piping beneath the sink with new equipment for $570.
There is long term damage to the downstairs toilet, so he basically rebuilt its innards, including cutting off seriously rusted bolts. He charged $60 for that work.
The Master bath also needed work requiring removing and replacing the john. That was another $230.
The plumbers offer a 2 year warranty on their work. After literally spending the whole day at my house, they charged $860 in total.
The dishwasher is not leaking from the pipes, but the drain. Last year, we had a stainless steel hose installed for the line in. There may actually be rodent damage to one of the gaskets for the drain. Plus that one is still a soft hose. So it will not be warranty coverage. I will have to have Maytag come. They charge $98 just to diagnose, plus whatever it costs to fix it.
The rodent damage is another issue.... I have had little success with the pest control companies dealing adequately with rodents. They put out sticky traps, which the critters ignore. Or they put out bait, which the critters also ignore. But if they eat the bait, it makes them very thirsty, so we are back to plumbing issues. <sigh>
I am a vision impaired widow, living with my youngest son, who is in college, and my oldest son, who has a severe brain injury. As you can imagine, we live on a fixed income, except when I can work part time online to earn a little bit more.
This is very difficult for me to put this out here. I do not want to come off as having an entitlement attitude. But in order to take care of this, I had to use funds which are not mine.
The math may not work out exactly on this. i also took into account the fact that GoFundMe takes 2.5% plus $3 for each donation.
