Over 80% of Bali's GDP is sourced from tourism either directly or indirectly. Since the beginning of the pandemic, tourists were encouraged to leave the island and return to their home countries which the vast majority understandably chose to do. This has had a devastating effect on the Balinese & Indonesian people who reside on Bali island.

Many businesses, small and large have had to close permanently and this situation is sure to have long-term economic effects on the majority of the people who call Bali home. We have heard of some horrendous stories from the local people we have met, who out of pure desperation are simply trying to survive until tourists are allowed to enter Indonesia again. The government have announced this will not be until some point next year. As a surf school on the island we are fortunate enough to have had loyal customers in the expats who have remained on the island, however we have been using portions of our profits to support the many businesses who are struggling.

This situation will mean almost one whole year without a stable income for the majority. To put it into perspective, for most Indonesians living in Bali a decent income would be $6 per day. For most, that has now reduced to around $0.60, if they're lucky to have an income at all. Some local people have been innovative and found fresh means of income through new business ideas, however with little or nothing to spend the people are unable to support the economy.

At One More Wave Surf Bali, we are now taking it into our own hands to provide food packages to those in need, to ensure their basic needs are met. They can therefore focus on paying rent, their monthly payments and debts they are constantly worried about and know that their families can for survive another couple of weeks. But we need your help to ensure we help as many people as possible! From March-May we fed over 1000 people, however the fundraising ran dry and we are now back with a bang to get it started again!

After much research to see how we can support these families and individuals best, we compiled a 'shopping list' of the most used and requested items.
We include these items in every food package we distribute:

10kg rice
20 eggs
10 packets of noodles
200g salt
2 bars of soap
1ltr oil
500g Bali coffee
1kg sugar

The total of which is 205,000 IDR - the equivalent of £10.68 or $13.65. This is enough to support a family of 4 for two weeks. We are so happy to be able to help and the reactions from the people we've helped so far have been that of elation and intense gratitude.

To have the opportunity to take the pressure off and allow those who have now suffered for upwards of 7 months to have some form of stability is such a joy. If you have ever travelled to Bali or maybe you plan to sometime in the future and you're fortunate enough to make a donation, we would be so appreciative of your support.
