Jeni and Scott are two ordinary people, just like you and I. They both work: Scott in graphics and signage, Jeni as an elementary school teacher. They have a dog. They rent a house in Seattle. Weekends are spent living life: road trips for camping, mountain biking, and spending time with friends.
But they've hit a rough patch: in April of 2018, at just shy of 40 years old, Jeni was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma. She underwent a major surgery to remove the original tumor, and followed that up with five months of immunotherapy. The immunotherapy proved to be ineffective. Worse, follow-up scans early this year found that the melanoma had spread to her brain, lungs, and liver. Jeni is now considered stage 4, and treatments are very limited - chemo therapy is not effective at fighting melanoma, so Jeni is left with expensive drug trials and experimental treatments.
Battling cancer takes its toll, not just physically, but financially. Medical bills are just the tip of the iceberg. There are doctors appointments, drugs, and dealing with unexpected side effects. All these translate into lost work hours for both Scott and Jeni, which means less income at a time of need as well as less time pursuing her passion for teaching and less energy for the adventures that mean living life. Most critically, the loss of income directly threatens Jeni and Scott's ability to continue living in Seattle, where Jeni's teaching job provides her with health insurance, as well as her home base for the medical support team battling to get her healthy.
