Onderzoek Reuma, medicijnen en Coronavirus

Sinds kort is de corona pandemie ook in Nederland aan de gang. Met name voor sommige kwetsbare groepen mensen is dit een groot probleem, zoals voor mensen met reuma en andere chronische ziekten die daar medicijnen voor gebruiken.
Meer dan 300 duizend mensen in Nederland hebben reuma (zoals reumatoïde artritis, artritis psoriatica en Bechterew),  een chronische darmziekte  (ziekte van Crohn of colitis ulcerosa), of de huidziekte psoriasis. Veel van hen gebruiken hier medicijnen voor die de afweer beïnvloeden. Hoewel deze medicijnen erg veilig zijn, is het niet bekend of en hoeveel ze meer risico geven op een infectie (met bijvoorbeeld corona virus), of dat ze (in sommige gevallen) juist beschermend werken. Voor sommige medicijnen lijkt het laatste namelijk het geval.
De onderzoekers van de afdeling reumatologie, maag-darmleverziekten en dermatologie van de Sint Maartenskliniek, het Radboudumc, en enkele andere ziekenhuizen hebben de handen in elkaar geslagen om een groot wetenschappelijk onderzoek te doen hiernaar.
Voor dit onderzoek - het COVID-I2 onderzoek - worden 2200 patiënten benaderd om mee te doen, waarbij gekeken gaat worden wat risicofactoren zijn om infecties te krijgen, met name corona. De mensen worden verdeeld over 2 groepen, waarbij de ene groep bij een infectie doorgaat met de medicijnen, en de andere groep tijdelijk zal stoppen. 

Om dit onderzoek te realiseren hebben we je hulp nodig! Met name omdat we op korte termijn moeten starten gezien de epidemie die nu speelt. Je kunt helpen door te doneren, of dit bericht te verspreiden via mensen die je kent. Help ons dit onderzoek te laten slagen!

The corona pandemic that is spanning the globe is a major problem, especially for some vulnerable groups of people, such as people with rheumatism and other chronic diseases who use medicines.
More than a 100 million people worldwide have rheumatism (such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis), a chronic bowel disease (Crohn's or ulcerative colitis), or the skin disease psoriasis, or other autoimmune diseases. Many of them use medicines that may affect the immune system. Although these drugs are very safe, it is not known whether they increase the risk of an infection (with corona virus, for example), or whether they (in some cases) have a protective effect on infection. The latter seems to be the case for some medicines.
The researchers from the department of rheumatology, gastroenterology and dermatology of the Sint Maartenskliniek, the Radboudumc, and several other hospitals have joined forces to conduct a large scientific study into this.
For this study - the COVID-I2 study (COntinuation Versus Interruption of Drugs) - 2200 patients with abovementioned diseases are invited to participate in a study that looks at risk factors for getting infections, especially corona virus. These patients will be divided into 2 groups, with one group continuing to take the drugs in case of infection and the other group stopping temporarily . This randomised trial will try to answer the important question whether it is better to stop or to continue these drugs in case of infection.
