Support Om Sleiman Farm CSA in Palestine

Donation protected

We at Om Sleiman Farm have been running a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm in the West Bank in Palestine for the past 5 years. Our work has been an important connection that ties us to our land, and a dreaming space that aspires to showcase our vision of a sustainable and independent future in Palestine.

Om Sleiman Farm was born in 2016 as an effort to re-imagine resistance as a community effort rooted in the intersection of the social, economic, and environmental. We have operated since our inception as a CSA, mobilizing community resources to support farmers on the ground. We sought a popular education model to provide a space for teaching and learning about sustainable practices in farming and building. The farm is based in Bil’in and carries the village’s long tradition of popular resistance, and seeks to continuously embody that tradition in what it does.

Our farm has operated on 3.7 acres (1.5 ha) land that was dedicated by the community, producing healthy, seasonal, and sustainable food for our members. At our peak, we were able to reach 30 families that supported the farm and its vision.

We want to go further. Being environmentally sustainable served as an important blueprint for our next step: we want to be socially and economically sustainable. We want to be owned by our members and workers. We want to explore community ownership and operation and transform the farm into a place where food becomes a reason for organizing together and acting together.

Our Farm Today

We use today an acre of land to produce the food we share with our members. We are running 3 greenhouses to support food production as well as our native plants nursery, where we collect native seeds and propagate them in order to help re-introduce them back to our landscape. We have our own seed library, beehives and sustainable compost production to regenerate our soil. The farm supports two full time farmers today, as well as a rotating number of interns and volunteers. We continue to run workshops by and for the community about topics such as basic farming skills, sustainable buildings, and homesteading skills (soap making, fermentation, etc.)

Farming apprenticeships

With the help of local organizations, we experimented with running farming apprenticeships in Palestine and Jordan in 2018/2019 in an effort to create it politically-aware environmental activists and farmers. This effort was supported by Dalia Association in Palestine and Zikra Initiative in Jordan.

Natural Building

We were able to work with one of our apprentices to create a series of workshops that explored the idea of natural building in the farm’s context. We found it to be an organic extension to the work we do on a farming level. Over a period of two months, we were able to set up and build a space to hold upcoming workshops and training. Palestinians and international participants from across a wide geographic area were able to take part in these workshops.

Where the money would go

We are raising money to be able to size up the operations of the farm and establish a viable economic size that would allow it to operate as a community-owned and operated farm.

Harvest station + storage + kitchen: $10,000

Getting fresh and seasonal harvests to our members is challenging, especially as we try to grow beyond 30 members to stay viable as a farm. Harvesting, storing, processing, packing, and possibly preserving fresh produce is increasingly becoming a bottleneck because we lack proper harvesting and processing stations in addition to a storage space. This will allow us to handle bigger harvests in the future while spreading out the effort without the concern about the freshness of the vegetables, fruits, and herbs and their quality.

A kitchen is essential for our ability to prepare and preserve produce in a culturally relevant way, through drying, fermenting, and a host of other methods. Cooking seasonal produce on the farm will enable us to host small groups and share food on the farm, which will provide visitors a window into our culture while providing the farm with another stream of income.

Building on the farm continues to be a challenge to us, given that the Israeli army limits the permits granted to do so. As a natural extension to our message, we use local building methods and expertise, in addition to natural resources to resist this unfair system.

Terracing (expanding growing area): $6,000

We’ve come a long way since we started our CSA with 8 members. We have managed to get to 30 members at our peak production. To handle the growing demand we have, we are hoping to be able to expand the farm growing area into 3 new terraces. These terraces are built using traditional dry stacking techniques, which has preserved top soil from eroding for thousands of years. We are hoping this new space, with the needed compost and watering storage and network will be able to grow trees and vegetables that expand our membership capacity to 15 more members.

Chicken Coop & Beehives: $5,000

We are hoping to use chicken and bees as new members of the farm’s ecosystem, which will allow us to complete some of the natural circles around us in addition to important new income streams for the farm.

We plan to add 10 new beehives to help us pollinate the growing number of fruit trees on the farm, and that will bring our annual honey production to 100kg. We plan to build a coop to bring in 100-200 heritage breed hens in order to recycle organic matter, produce fertility for the farm, and hopefully provide eggs to complement our shares nutritionally.

Electric expenses - solar panels : $5,000

Having an independent power source that might be a resource for us and our neighboring farmers is something we have been dreaming of. Expanding the farm, along with all related operations has been a challenge without our own source of power to run the tools and equipment we use.

Moreover, the farm is becoming an energetic center in the area, where we have workers and volunteers, in addition to visitors, on the farm for most of the day. This has brought extra energy needs that we can no longer fulfill.

We are budgeting to source and install a 1500-2000 KW system with batteries as a starting point, hoping to be able to expand it if needed in the near future.

Finishing Accommodation Room for hosting volunteers: $1,000

We are becoming increasingly dependent on having a space on the farm to host volunteers, especially after COVID hit March 2020 and resulted in the closure of the Hostel in Ramallah that was providing most of the accommodation needs for volunteers.

We have built a space that protects us from the elements, but it has some way to go to be able to reliably support hosting volunteers. We are looking for ways to insulate the walls using natural materials, and to insulate the root and prevent it from leaking. Basic furniture and heating systems will be our final touches to make the space able to host our volunteers.

Unpaid salaries: $10,000

Why have we accumulated unpaid salaries?

Year 2020 was a challenging year for everyone including our farm operation in Om Sleiman Farm. We couldn’t let our members down when they needed us the most. When a lockdown was imposed by the government due to increasing numbers of COVID-19, we made a collective decision to buy a vehicle for the farm to transport our shares door-to-door instead of paying a chunk of the seasonal salaries.

In addition, we saw a sister business close its doors because of COVID-19. Hostel in Ramallah hosted our volunteers and supported our operation. We had to build a room for our volunteers and host them on the farm instead.

These challenges coincided with an ambitious plan we had embarked on to expand the number of farm beds we had, along with investing in building the soil for the existing ones after seeing signs of need. This resulted in the farm borrowing against the farmers’ compensation to be able to continue to offer our community healthy food in these exceptional times. We hope to pay back our debts and get back to a more sustainable balance sheet.

Shredder for compost making: $2,000

We use both compost and mulch very extensively on the farm. We have resorted to buying material to incorporate as either. A shredder will allow us to turn carbonaceous material produced on the farm, such as tree cuttings, into material that will eventually build our soil. Meanwhile, this capital investment will allow us to save on the running costs going forward.
