Om is said to be the first sound of the universe. It connects us to all that is, all that was and all that will be. Shanti is a Sanskrit word that means peace. Together, the #OmMantra is a prayer for peace. For us, Om Thosar embodies his namesake. He is a loving son, brother and friend at the heart of our close-knit family whose tragic turn of events recently reminded us that life is short – and we need help bringing him home.
Life was just starting to find a rhythm for Om. He has always been of an entrepreneurial mindset, molding his career path into a unique mix of successful opportunities. He started his own pool maintenance service -- Blue Magic Pools -- during college, which continues to actively grow. After graduating, Om found his calling by enjoying work as a tax professional with personalized appointments at a bustling local firm. Om also pursued another passion of his -- fitness and health -- personally training clients at a local gym. The seasonal and distinctive nature of these ventures allowed him to develop and focus on all of his ambitions.
Om's next step toward his progression came this past summer when he moved out of Long Island to the vibrant atmosphere of Astoria, Queens to strive for bigger goals. He quickly obtained a real estate license and broke into the field by working at a firm in Midtown, New York City. Abruptly, his inspirational work ethic and enthusiasm for new challenges was stalled.
At the end of October, Om saw a practitioner to inquire about a routine cough, an enlarged lymph node on his neck and sudden knee pain that became worse by the hour. Within a matter of minutes, that simple checkup dramatically changed Om’s life in every way possible. The word cancer immediately became a household topic of discussion.
Promptly, Om has been in and out of exams, blood tests, procedures, CT & PET scans, all to find out that at age 29, he has been diagnosed with T-cell Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
Om has since been living as an inpatient out of a small medical room at Stony Brook Hospital for three weeks. His life revolves around doctors, blood work, needles, bone marrow biopsies, spinal taps and – what’s most jarring – an intensive chemotherapy program.
He was forced to stop working. He moved out of his apartment in Astoria and trucked his belongings back to his childhood home on Long Island. Om’s life – once full of zest – is now replete with frequent friend and family visits, hospital meals, uninterrupted fatigue and a perpetual feeling of being trapped.
Om is fighting for his life, but please help us to remind him that he’s not alone.
His diagnosis carries a severe emotional and financial weight. Over the next 12-18 months, Om will undergo various chemo and radiation treatments in an effort to completely remove a 14-centimeter mass in the center of his chest, along with cancerous lymph nodes and cells. With every procedure comes a cost – a cost that cancer made sure we couldn’t prepare for.
We are asking for your help. Om will be physically unable to work for the foreseeable future. Whether it’s through hope, reaching out or helping offset costs associated with this diagnosis, we are thankful for any of the support. The only reason our hearts are optimistic is because of the encouragement we’ve already drawn.
