Hello & thank you so much for taking the time to get to know the story of our baby, Oliver Blu.
Here it is:
Our sweet (almost) 3 year old baby boy, Oliver Blu, went to bed on Saturday, 10/20/2018, a happy little guy after chasing his beloved tennis ball and donut toy all day long. When he woke up on Sunday, 10/21/2018, he didn’t even want to come out of his crate. He refused his food at first (which NEVER happens - he actually has a maze food bowl because he eats too fast!).
I have always known to check my dog’s gums when they seem off, and was shocked when I peeled back his lips & saw very pale gums.
We made our way to the ER vet right away & he had his blood work taken. I was completely blindsided & knew NOTHING about the pamphlet labeled IMHA that he was handing to me & took him home with me.
Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA), often also called autoimmune mediated hemolytic anemia (AIHA), is a disease process where the body’s immune system attacks its own red blood cells (RBC). When this RBC destruction occurs, it results in severe anemia (e.g., a low RBC count) and lack of oxygen delivery to the cells in the body. As IMHA can quickly become life-threatening due to severe anemia, immediate attention by a veterinarian is imperative.
We admitted him early Monday morning, 10/22/2018, into a specialty veterinarian hospital and he is still there today. He’s with an Internal Medicine doctor that we have grown to be very fond of.
He has had multiple blood transfusions & is taking a steady dose of steroids, immunosuppressants, and blood thinners.
He has also had x-rays done, an ultrasound, 24 hour care, multiple full blood panels, a tick borne blood panel, antibiotics, and 24 hour fluids via catheter.
He has an Instagram (@fiftyshadesofoliverblu) where I also post many updates. He has many followers that adore him and have already given us so much emotional support-- we thank you and appreciate each of you.
The monetary goal that we hope to raise here is not even close to Oliver Blu's medical expenses, but with all of the friends that he has made through social media & in person, any little bit can help.
We are not only sharing his story for monetary relief, but also to spread the word about this awful and scary autoimmune disease. Oliver has brought so much positivity into this world, we thought by sharing this we can give back to him the positivity he has spread. Whether it be a small donation, a positive thought, a prayer, or a "share" on your page, we appreciate anything and everything you choose to put forth.
Our little guy is a fighter & the biggest lover ever.
We can't wait to see him running after that dang tennis ball again...or barking at the TV every time an animal flashes the screen.
