The primary mission of the Oklahoma Law Enforcement Assistance Program (OKLEAP) is to provide assistance and support to all emergency first responder professionals. Our mission is accomplished by providing training, education and physiological assistance in a structured three-day environment through Post Critical Incident Seminars. OKLEAP will provide the communication tools necessary for them to speak to their families and help them understand what they are going through with the goal of reducing the number of suicides, divorces, and prolonging their vitally important careers.
During any given year as many as 500 first responders lives are lost in our communities across the United States. First responders are typically law enforcement officers, firemen, emergency medical technicians, 911 dispatchers, and others who tirelessly attend to our community’s critical safety and emergency needs. Unfortunately, between a quarter and a third of these public servants deaths occur on the job by murders, vehicle accidents or training incidents. Also and sadly, as many as 300 or more will take their own life each year due to physical and emotional trauma from the events they experienced in the line of duty. Additionally, the divorce rate within this group is currently higher than many other professions especially when on the job for ten years or longer. Other challenges facing these individuals include an high rate of alcoholism, emotionally related illnesses and various chemical addictions. As a result, the average life expectancy of a first responder is ten years below the national average. These citizens need our help!
Emergency first responder professionals attending the seminars will have an unparalleled opportunity to share their experiences with peers and to offer and receive valuable support. Participants come to realize that sharing their experiences with fellow first responders, whose experiences are similar to their own, allows them to recognize that they are not alone. This provides them a sense of normalcy and confidence that their recovery is under way. Attendees will also have access to mental health professionals during the sessions. These professionals work closely with law enforcement and first responders who understand the challenges that their professions carry. OKLEAP’s seminars provide the participants with education on trauma, identify effective patterns of resolution, and offer proven coping strategies that promote healing and recovery.
