CLEANER AND SAFER ENVIRONMENT FOR NICARAGUA: ENVIRONMENTAL LANDFILL CONSTRUCTION
With your help, we can improve vastly the living and health conditions for over 1.000 families and homes.
IS THERE A PROBLEM?
YES, THERE IS!
Most municipalities in Nicaragua don´t have adequate mechanisms for efficient and sustainable waste management. The common practice is to collect the waste and deposit it without any treatment at a central, open-air waste dump, often located on the outskirts of a city. This practice is a major source of air, water and soil pollution and has serious consequences for the environment and the population health. CAN WE SOLVE IT? YES, WE CAN!
The municipality of San Pedro de Lovago, together with the Portuguese NGO Oikos - cooperação e desenvolvimento and the Nicaraguan NGO Asociación Renovables en Nicaragua, has started a cooperation process to construct an environmental landfill with a recycling center. This will significantly contribute to an ecologically sustainable municipality, ensuring current and future generations a cleaner and safer environment. WHAT DO WE NEED?
The construction of an environmental landfill requires several stages.
1) Study and design of the environmental landfill - Already completed
The study, carried out by a team of specialists, compiled all the necessary data for an integral design of the environmental landfill. The study includes a classification and calculation of the daily amount of waste generated, an operational and financial analysis of the recollection and processing system and the projected impact on the environment. Based on the study, a definitive blueprint of the site and a management plan have been produced.
2) Construction of environmental landfill
The current dumping site will be cleaned up and make way for the environmental landfill. In the construction, mechanisms are included to ecologically discharge liquids and gases produced by the decomposition of organic material. The infrastructure also includes a recycling center to further reduce solid waste and to contribute to the financial sustainability of the environmental landfill by selling recycled material to specialized companies.
3) Municipal environmental and waste management training
A training program on the collection, transport, sorting and processing of waste for the qualified municipal staff will be set up. In addition, the tariff system has been reviewed and applied more strictly SO, LET'S DO IT!
We are happy to report that the study and design of the environmental landfill has been conducted and the technical plans have been drawn. The goal is to fund the construction of the environmental landfill itself. Construction costs are estimated at around 80.000 euros or 3.000.000 córdobas. This covers the costs of construction materials, machinery, workforce and initial clean-up of the dumping site. (Plus € 7,500 for management and fundraising costs)With your help, we can make the landfill a reality and improve vastly the living and health conditions for over 1.000 families and homes. Please share as much as you can, to get the word out!
Even if you can't donate, can you please share with at least 10 persons that you think they can help?Thank YOU!

This approach ensures that all the interventions we proposed are based on the real needs of the people, thus assuring that the population and local institutions appropriate the results of our projects.
The construction of this landfill is planned until the final of 2019 and 2020 is the deadline for Oikos' commitment to the population, partners, the European Commission and external auditors. www.oikos.pt
