With heart-felt regret, on July 14, 2016, Louisiana lost it’s Oldest Governor’s Mansion in Opelousas, circa 1850, to a devastating fire. The mansion that stood on the corner of Liberty and Grolee Streets was used as a residence for Governor Thomas Overton Moore in 1862 when Opelousas served as the capital of Louisiana during the U.S. Civil War. The mansion, also known as, the Charles Homere Mouton home, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places entered in August, 1991. Currently, the mansion was undergoing preservation managed by OGMLA Foundation. The workmanship was of the highest level of artisan restoration. Despite this tragedy, the Foundation plans to continue it’s mission of preserving the national significance of the history and story of the role the mansion played during that historic time and the people who lived that role. Investigation of the fire is ongoing and authorities tell us arson is suspected. There is also a possibility that other historic buildings in the area are at risk. Thank you for helping us Save the History of OGMLA. Monies raised will be used for the continuation of our project with plans to rebuild as well as a possible reward fund.
