OEA Teacher Lunches for Strike

Oakland Unified School District teachers, psychologists, counselors, librarians, nurses and social workers are on strike effective Thursday, February 21st.
95% of OEA members have voted to stand together and strike on the picket lines from 6:00am-4:00pm until the district comes to a reasonable agreement. Staff from United For Success and Life Academy are asking for donations to purchase lunches for teacher on the picket lines. By providing lunches and possibly breakfast teachers will be able to fully participate in daily activities.
I am a psychologist who has worked as a teacher as well as educational specialist in a range of programs within Oakland Unified. I currently live in Oakland where my children also attend school. The funds from this campaign will directly go to pay for teacher lunches who are on strike and cannot afford to purchase lunches. These are teachers at United For Success Middle School in Oakland. I have currently paid for lunches using my credit card since the strike has begun. A few other educators at the school have also used their personal funds. I and teachers are keeping receipts and will be refunded once the money from this gofund me account is released. I plan to refund teachers by providing a check after withdrawing money from the gofund me account once money is deposited into my wellsfargo account. The benefactors are mostly friends and family of educators from United For Success as well as friends and family.
Reason for striking now!
We want quality education for our students which includes more competitive salaries and desirable working places for educators. More of our schools are being shut down and turned into charter schools, parents with means are taking their children out of our public schools and teachers simply cannot afford to live in the Oakland area where they teach. We do not want to strike and stop important services but it is necessary to make pertinent changes to our school system so that students can have a fair chance at success!
