Founded in 1979 with a core belief that the arts are fundamental to the fostering of creativity and innovation so necessary for the success of our residents in an ever changing, competitive world, Olean Community Theatre, Inc. is a volunteer organization proudly providing high quality on-stage and behind the scenes theater experiences to individuals of all ages, backgrounds and experiences. Many of our alumni have gone on to successfully perform in regional theater, touring companies, and in off-Broadway and Broadway productions as actors, singers, choreographers, and sound and light technicians. We are proud of our 40 year legacy and look excitedly to the future with new experiences and opportunities to share with our community.
Presently OCT offers the area at least 4 major productions per year, relying on the ingenuity and dedication of our volunteer directors, producers, choreographers, musicians, set designers, stage managers, light and sound technicians and actors to adjust to the needs of a new venue for each show. Having had no home base of our own, we have had to store our electronic and set equipment and costumes throughout the city, and we have needed to make adjustments of space and time with each production at each different venue. Thankfully we have always been blessed by the commitment from our patrons and the Olean community as they have followed us from venue to venue. You, our patrons, have always been the very cornerstone of our success as a company and you are just as invaluable to us as we now approach the next step in our journey to provide the best the arts has to offer for our community.
As you may be aware, Olean Community Theatre, after many years of searching for a home, has entered into an agreement to purchase the Temple B'Nai Israel at 127 South Barry Street in Olean. This property is located in Olean's City Center and the hub of new development and influx of DRI funds. This temple has been designated on the National Register of Historical Places for its unique architecture and its rich history in the community. The congregation of B'Nai Israel is in full support of this sale to OCT, knowing that the space will be reused as a theater/arts center of our community. Furthermore, B'Nai Israel recognizes the solid and long standing reputation of Olean Community Theatre as an indicator that we would be responsible owners and caretakers of such an important historical building.
We have many plans to create a beautiful and thriving arts touchstone for our area, and to extend our legacy as the only community theater in the region to operate continuously since 1979. OCT has been recognized and awarded for its outstanding performances by directors, producers, actors, singers, musicians, choreographers and technicians on many occasions by the Theater Association of New York State, and has had its productions invited to perform at their annual state festival, winning top honors even at that level. OCT also has an equipment and costume rental program that assists local high school and other community theater productions. With the stability of a permanent home with room to store all of our costumes and equipment, we have plans to expand this program to include internships for high school students to learn to use this equipment and assist in every capacity of behind-the-scenes theater production, in the hope of inspiring our youth and assuring the continuation of theater in our area for the next generation and beyond.
The Olean Community Theatre Board of Directors and volunteer participants share an exciting vision of creating a state-of-the-art theater, where we can produce and host dramatic and musical theater, lectures, art displays, seminars, and become a thriving center of the creative arts for our area for years to come. We sincerely hope you share in our excitement and our commitment, and we need your help to make our vision come to fruition. We look forward to working with you toward providing our Olean community the artistic opportunities it needs and so richly deserves.
