Help Barbara Beat Cancer

My name is Barbara Anderson and this is our story.

Update August 11, 2015

John and I are back in San Antonio and happy to be home. After several doctor visits John found a wound
specialist he is comfortable with and is giving him good care. He continues to undergo treatments to heal
his foot and we are hopeful the healing will continue.

I am still travelling to MD Anderson in Houston to get the care I need for my Multiple Myeloma and Amyloidosis until I find a specialist in San Antonio. I wasn't able to under go the Stem Cell Transplant Surgery due to prior chemotherapy treatments. My body couldn't make the amount of healthy stem cells I needed for the procedure. Multiple Myeloma is a blood cancer that develops in the plasma cells in your bones called bone marrow. Amyloidosis occurs when an abnormal protein builds up in your organs. There is currently no cure but treatment can help manage it.

My doctor has prescribed Revlimid/Lenalidomide this is a chemotherapy type oral medication that treats cancer.
The cost of Revlimid is prohibitive. This treatment is necessary for me to treat my cancers. Please help me
fight and win this awful disease. We need your help. Please Share our campaign with your friends and family.
Ask them to help us with a donation. Your prayers have helped us and we are so thankful. Please continue to
PRAY and DONATE. We can't do this without you. We are grateful to you all. God Bless you and protect you.
Sincerely,
John and Barbara Anderson

On September 28, 2010 my husband John and I
travelled to North Dakota after purchasing a ninety
year old home.  Our plan was to spend the summers in
ND away from the Texas heat and the remainder of the year at home in San Antonio.  Since we arrived in
ND we have both become very ill.  John got an infection in his right foot and had part of his foot amputated.  He then suffered a fall while at the dentist. The chair he was sitting in collapsed causing neck and back injuries. Recently, John had Glaucoma Valve Surgery after losing the sight in his right eye. The sight in his eye will never fully restore itself.

I was having a routine physical examination in August of 2013.  A mass was detected in my right breast. After
several x-ray's,ultrasounds and an MRI the mass was determined to be malignant.  I had Cancer. I had surgery to remove the mass and tests showed the breast Cancer hadn't spread but the tissues surrounding the area showed two different types of blood Cancer.  Multiple-Myeloma and Amyloidosis.  I began radiation therapy with Chemotherapy to follow.
I then began having problems with my hands and teeth.  I had Carpal Tunnel surgery and several teeth extracted.  I now wear a partial on my lower jaw.  A combination of the Chemotherapy and Amyloidosis was causing my dental issues.  I had several months of
Chemotherapy shots and Chemotherapy pill treatments. After having the treatments my doctor said to me "You have improved a little but you are not worse".  I was hoping for much better news.  We live in a very small community in ND and are traveling one hundred miles each way to the hospitals where we recieve our treatments.  We've endured treacherous driving conditions in the snow and ice and countless hours of traveling home in the dark with gasoline near $4.00 a gallon and over 20,000 miles on our vehicle. Needless to say the expenses for traveling and medications have been much more than we could  have ever imagined.  My husband wanted to get another opinion on additional treatments and contacted MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX.  MD Anderson is the premier Cancer authority in the world and it was so important for my health sake to be seen there.  We arranged to have medical records sent from ND to Houston and I was seen for two weeks in November of 2014.  After several tests and studies it was determined I would have a Stem Cell Transplant. The tests show I was healthy enough for the Stem Cell Transplant but  would first have to be cleared by my dentist.  Another visit to the dentist  shows I have an infection in my jaw and need more teeth extracted.  I am now healing from dental surgery and will see my dentist on March 20th.  Once I get his approval I can set up my Stem Cell Transplant surgery for the end of April or early May.
The final hurdle is our out of pocket expenses which include $60,000.00 for medication not covered by our insurance and after surgery I will have to have 24 hour care for 3-6 weeks in an apartment or motel for my self and a non related health care provider. The cost of this is around $8500.00 every ten days.  We expect the total cost of the medication and health care provider to be around $100.000.00.  Any amount you donate  will certainly assist us in reaching our goal.

We sincerely thank you for your help and support.
