As some of you may know, a few years ago a lawsuit was filed against the league, Bob Sharp, the rink, the referees (my son Lukasz and Jim Ferrell) and a player that was involved in play that resulted in an injury. Having first hand insight into this suit since I was responsible for my son's defense, frankly it was a stressful, unfounded waste of time and money.
On the positive side, the suit is finally settled vs Bob Sharp, and all involved can move on. Unfortunately, Bob, who was commissioner at the time and devoted countless hours to making Sunday nights fun, finds himself $2,800 poorer. The total cost for Bob to defend the lawsuit was approximately $11,000. Wisely over the years he set aside approximately $8,200 in an OCHL emergency fund in case an issue like this ever arose.
Since he was sued personally he paid the remaining $2,800 out of his pocket.
Knowing how much Bob has committed to the league over 20+ years, I don't think that's right. I'd like to ask all players to donate $10 - $15 to help cover Bob's out-of-pocket expense. If we do that we'll more than cover his expense, any remaining $$$ can go to an end of season party or we'll donate it to the OYHL.
As a point of information, the league is now run by the Ozaukee Ice Center, which hopefully prevents incidents like this from having personal impact on volunteers in the future.
