OCEAN - Production Fundraiser

Donation protected
Dear Friends & Family,

In February, I will be performing an original music-theater piece, OCEAN, at SAFEhouse Arts in San Francisco. I’m very excited about this project because it expresses a vision I’ve had since my teens and early twenties -- of bringing vocal work together with narrative storytelling in a truly innovative way.

OCEAN, a combination of musical theater and sound installation, tells the story of a sailor adrift at sea after a storm. As she tries to remember her identity and find her way home, she encounters a series of ocean deities who challenge her arrogance -- and humanity’s -- in the face of nature’s power.

Like recent pieces I’ve presented -- Dendrochronology: A Work in Progress, a soundscape that explored the sonic dance between nature, people, and industrialization in a logging town, and Coulterville, an installation about an outpost of survivors after cataclysmic climate change events -- OCEAN speaks to broad concerns about human nature and the morality of our times.

OCEAN will be performed with Dan Zemelman on piano and Wally Schnalle on drums, two incredible Bay Area musicians, accompanied by a soundscape of voices, sound effects, and narration that collectively bring the ocean to life.

To support the quality of the production and proper documentation of the live performances, I’ve created this GoFundMe campaign and would be honored by your sponsorship and support. The funds raised will be used for the following:

* Set Design -- props, set pieces, and small backdrops

* Sound & Video Recording -- quality recordings for documentation and future grant applications

* Hiring a Director -- specifically, Katie Rubin (see her bio below)

OCEAN is already in rehearsal and tickets are available through SAFEhouse Arts for the two February performances. Yet because the venue is small, even if we sell out, the income will defray only about 80% of the venue’s cost and nothing more. Therefore, my goal is to raise $5,000. This amount will not only ensure the quality of this production, but also help me establish a track record through sound and video recordings that can be used for grant applications and to promote this and future productions.

If you are inspired by this project and my vision for bringing new music theater works to the stage, I would be deeply grateful for your contribution. This is a very exciting period for me creatively. Although it has been daunting to share my vision and desire publicly, I realize that this type of work requires sharing my mission with others -- asking for support and acknowledging that creating art is, at its best, done in community.

Feel free to message me if you would like more information about OCEAN or, if you are in the Bay Area, would like to support the production in person.

Wishing all of you love!

With Gratitude,
Lynea Diaz-Hagan
