OCEAN AWARENESS. . . ONE TILE AT A TIME

Tax deductible
Show your ocean love and celebrate the legacy of Walter Munk ... help fund THE MAP® of the Grand Canyons of La Jolla Educational Plaza!

Friends of La Jolla Shores, in partnership with the Walter Munk Foundation for the Oceans, invite you to support completion of THE MAP® to educate and inspire current and future generations!

THE MAP®

THE MAP®, fabricated by Robin Brailsford and Wick Alexander, is a 2,400 square foot LithoMosaic® plaza that tells the story of the underwater park and ecological reserves just offshore. It colorfully illustrates over 100 life-sized local species, the underwater topography of the canyons, local dive sites and surf spots, Marine Protected Areas and State Marine Reserve boundaries. It also features J.J., the Orphaned Baby Gray Whale, rescued and rehabilitated by SeaWorld.

THE MAP® will provide interactive, identification-based learning opportunities for millions of visitors each year. The Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and local schools will use THE MAP® as a field trip destination.

THE PROJECT

Promote ocean stewardship... Help us install this unique educational resource in Kellogg Park!

THE MAP® of the Grand Canyons of La Jolla Educational Plaza will be located between the children’s playground and south comfort station, adjacent to Walter Munk Way. It will become a part of our ocean history and culture while enhancing a public space visited by millions of people each year.

Current Project Site

The plaza will include THE MAP®, a 3D bronze casting depicting the underwater topography of the Grand Canyons of La Jolla, interpretive panels, landscaping and fencing, and a newly paved walkway.

Now we need your help to complete the project! Let's bring THE MAP®  to life!

THE MAP® is a community collaboration. Our partners include the San Diego Parks & Recreation Department, California Coastal Commission, Scripps Institution of Oceanography scientists and researchers, Birch Aquarium  Education Department, Ocean Discovery Institute, Kumeyaay Bands, Marine Protected Area representatives, lifeguards, surfers, scuba divers, and local merchants among others.

Now we need your help... each and every donation matters!
