There has been such an outpouring of interest in the Oaklands and specifically the iconic stained glass windows , that we have set up this opportunity for EVERYONE to participate in saving the Oaklands by funding the reconstruction of the lost stained glass windows. As we've reached our original goal, we are continuing to accept donations of any amount to continue preservation. Get your name on the wall NOW!
But, this is not primarily a fundraiser. This is an opportunity for your voice to be heard for generations, that you were willing to stand up and contribute to historic preservation. A donation of ANY amount puts your name on the wall at the Historic Oaklands on 9th as a contributor who chose restoration over demolition. We need your name on the wall!
In our ongoing efforts to both restore and preserve one of Minneapolis' first apartment buildings , the time has come to restore one of the buildings most stunning architectural features! No, we're not talking about Madonna laying on the front porch. The iconic stained glass windows!
When originally constructed, four beautifully crafted windows overlooked the 9th street entrance, gracefully greeting tenants and catching eyes of passers-by for over a century. Of the original four windows, two remain. The circular second-floor "bullseye" windows have shockingly survived multiple fires, abandonment, and nearly demolition. Unfortunately, the 3rd-floor stained glass windows were removed sometime in the late '70s and their disappearing act is pretty much a mystery at this point, the previous owners and tenants don't recall when they vanished. Suspicious! Though we can't bring back the original ones (trust me, we've been calling whoever we can) we are committed to having new windows made that would provide the original ambiance and look on the front facade. In our preservation of the Historic Oaklands Apartment building, we've partnered with Phil Daniel , a local stained glass craftsman who has the skill set, talent, and a remarkable eye for detail to bring our vision to light! Phil is committed to not only using the original design, but also period glass and technique.
Please join us in raising the money needed to cover Phil's generous time and materials. We will be dedicating a wall in the building with the names of all donors of any amount!
As a fun caveat the supporter with the largest donation gets a dinner out with the Oaklands crew!
