In September 2014, Jennifer went to the doctors with complaint of a shortness of breath , fluid in her lungs and a bloated abdomen. What she thought would be pneumonia turned out to be a stage 3 diagnosis of Primary Peritoneal Cancer (PPC).
This diagnosis is a relatively rare cancer that targets the thin, delicate cells in the lining of the peritoneum and the abdominal cavity. Early on, this type of cancer’s signs and symptoms often go unnoticed and aren’t usually diagnosed until the disease has progressed into its’ 3rd or 4th stage. PPC is very difficult to treat and typically has a similar prognosis and outcome as Epithelial Ovarian Cancer. Although the cause of Primary Peritoneal Cancer is unknown, research suggests an association with an inherited faulty gene that is linked to breast cancer in the family. Due to Jennifer having been adopted as an infant, she had no family history and no idea that this was in her future.
Immediately after receiving her diagnosis, Jennifer began chemotherapy treatments at 3 week intervals. After her 4th round of chemo, testing and scans shown no improvement and a different cocktail of chemotherapy was initiated. At her last appointment, her oncologist clearly stated that there would be no chance of remission and that her cancer still had no significant improvement.
Jennifer is a resilient, hardworking and selfless woman that is a rock that holds her family together. After finally landing her dream job in March of 2014, she put her Sudbury house on the market and moved her entire family to North Bay. Jennifer resides with her elderly parents whom she takes care of and her husband Rob. Although Rob and her parents have been an incredible source of support for her, Jenn constantly worries about their wellbeing if she were to die. Rob suffers from a Retinitis Pigmentosa, a serious visual impairment that prevents him from driving and that could once day render him completely blind and for her elderly parents that would be devastated to have to bury their child.
When exploring alternative options, The Oasis Of Hope in Mexico was brought to Jennifer’s attention. This facility is an alternative Cancer Care Centre that utilizes immunotherapy, laetrile, ozone therapy, allogeneic lymphocyte therapy as well as diet, emotional and spiritual care. This centre has been around for over 50 years and has had some very successful outcomes with patients with similar cancers as Jennifers. To cover the cost of the 1-month inpatient stay, the family needs to raise 30,000$ for Jennifer and Rob to be able to attend this facility.
