Our beloved boxer Lenny was diagnosed with IMHA (immune-mediated hemolytic anemia) last week. IMHA is a disease that causes a dog's immune system to attack its own red blood cells. With fewer and fewer red blood cells, oxygen is unable to reach the body, and our usually energetic Lenny is no longer able to stand or walk for long periods of time.
Lenny was rescued from an abusive home five years ago. He's completely deaf and suffered from separation anxiety at first, but he soon felt comfortable at home. He loves snuggling and sleeping with his humans and playing tug-of-war and fetch.
IMHA has a 50% survival rate, with many dogs able to return to their previous levels of activity with medication and care. Lenny is undergoing a blood transfusion today and is receiving fluids and medication via IVs because he is unable to eat or drink. The vets tell us that the transfusion will hopefully give the medication enough time to kick in and suppress the faulty immune system, but in the meantime he needs to be under their supervision, which, of course, leads to high medical bills. Each day at the animal hospital is running between one and two thousand dollars, not including costs for medication, ultrasounds, transfusions, or other needs.
We miss Lenny at home. He's such an important part of the family and we want him to be better and come back. When we return home, Lenny's head can always be seen in the window because he misses us so much, and he can barely contain his excitement when we open the door. Please help us bring him home.
