LIFE WITH ALS
Donation protected
In June of 2013, Thom was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) also know as Lou Gehrig's disease. Thom was forced to go on disability earning less then half of working wage, over the past 18 months he has lost his ability to talk, eat or drink by mouth he now uses a Gastrostomy Tube (G-tube). Thom does not leave our home very often for he has a hard time getting in and out of cars. His whole life has been put on hold, for he can no longer can do the things he most enjoyed. We have a hard time paying for his monthly utitities such as oil for heat( heat needs to be at least 70 degrees, for he is always cold) Eletricity(he uses 5 different machines,Thumper Vest, Cough Assist, Vac Assist-Suction Assist, Trilogy , Nebulizer machine,) Telephone which is needed for emergency ,Thom does not have life insurance and has decided to donate his body for the study of ALS, and we thought his burial would be covered by this, it was brought to our attention that they no longer cover this expense. We are now trying to cover this also. Thom will be having surgery in the next few weeks, he needs to have all his teeth pulled , for the muscles in his jaw can not hold them, there is a fear if theses are not removed he could lose one while he is sleeping and choke on it.
