Kim and Sean O’Donnell were so excited to learn they were pregnant with Baby #3 in the summer of 2019. As they prepared with excitement for their sweet family of 4 to grow to O’Donnell Party of 5, they received some concerning news. At a routine ultrasound appointment in November that there were some concerns with the baby. Initially they had wanted to be surprised and not learn the sex of the baby, but with the possibility of something being wrong Kim and Sean decided they wanted to grow with the baby and get to know he or she while they waited even more so and put a name to that sweet baby face. They asked the for the sex of the baby to be placed on a piece of paper and tucked in an envelope to open with their 2 beautiful girls that evening. Baby #3 that they have been hoping and waiting for is A BOY!! What a joyous moment in time for them all, all while knowing the results from earlier in the day had set off a chain reaction of tests and scans for upcoming 6 weeks, before Kim and Sean has definitive answers.
Baby Boy, O’Donnell has a deletion of 13Q12.2 – Q13.3. He also has a complex congenital heart defect, with aortic atresia, large ventricular septal defect and absent ductus venosus. The defect will require open heart surgery within his first week of being born to close the ventricular septal defect and place a tube in the aortic artery to open it up so that flood will begin to flow normally. Due to these complications, Kim and Sean will have to leave her 2 girls, ages 4 and 10 in Clarks Summit, PA for their parents (both Sean and Kim’s parents from Binghamton, NY) to rotate caring for the girls so that their lives don’t skip a beat for a minimum of 6 weeks. It will be a challenge to leave the girls for this lengthy period of time, although there will be visits to Philly to see Mom and Dad, and Dad going back and forth when possible. They are a close knit family, so there will be internal struggles with the separation.
Kim and Sean will head to CHOP 2 weeks prior to delivery, as they await baby boy’s delivery. Post birth, the baby will be monitored and then his heart will be repaired via open heart surgery, followed by a minimum of 4 weeks in the cardiac care intensive unit at CHOP. Kim and Sean are currently going back and forth to CHOP for appointments and to meet with their team of doctors. The cost for both travel, lodging and medical will become insurmountable and we would like to do anything we can to alleviate the day to day stresses from the O’Donnell Family. For some of you, you may not know this is not the first time that Kim and Sean have had to overcome a terrible diagnosis. Their oldest daughter, Kaidence was diagnosed with Leukemia at the age of 1. They fought an amazing fight, recently Kaidence celebrated her 8th year in remission. WOOHOO!!! They know the challenges that are ahead of them and sadly have been here before.
We want to do everything to help this beautiful, brave and inspirational family both emotionally, physically, spiritually, and financially. For those of you that know this family, you know that they give 1000% and with all their hearts. Their sweet baby boy is named, Seamus and he is surely living up to the meaning behind his name of a supplanter. He has been tripping up doctors and his parents along the way, and keeping them all on their toes. He is sure to be an energetic beautiful bundle of joy come the end of March.
