SAVING THE HALL OF CLESTRAIN FOR THE NATION!

Help spread the word!

Your donations will rapidly help secure the Hall from total ruin!

Born to The Hall of Clestrain, Orkney in 1813, Dr. John Rae became an intrepid Arctic Explorer with Hudson Bay Company.

Trusted friend of the Inuit peoples, they named him Aglooka, {Long Strides} He mapped vast tracts of the Arctic and via his Inuit friends, learned the tragic fate of  Sir John Franklin's  Northwest Passage expedition.

Tales of cannibalism shocked Victorian England. John Rae was vilified by Lady Jane Franklin and Charles Dickens. Rae's amazing reputation was crushed. Even though he himself found The Northwest passage!

With your help in securing the future of The Hall of Clestrain, The John Rae Society will mend these wounds, reconcile history and repair posthumously the previous friendship s between Rae and Franklin.

We will create a John Rae Centre celebrating Orkney's Canadian Arctic connection, the Inuit and Cree peoples and many of the staggering characters who formed the Canadian Nation.

Help spread the word!

We will provide a centre where everyone can share the history and learn of Orkney's famous son.

We shall celebrate here the cultures of the Canadian Arctic and Orkney's rich heritage, showing our binding relationships.
