Nyla's Road to Recovery

Donation protected
Just like any child, Nyla was so excited about Summer Break! I had the honor of being her 3rd grade teacher last year and I would hear all about how much she was looking forward to flying to Ohio to spend the summer with her family. She often talked about it and expressed how much she loved going there. However, at the beginning of June, shortly after Nyla arrived in Ohio she was involved in a horrific accident.

Nyla was visiting her aunt, uncle and cousins and they were driving from Ohio to Chicago for a weekend trip. While in Indiana they were hit head on by a drunk driver going the wrong way. Being the unbelievably brave and sweet girl that Nyla is, she was trying to protect her baby cousin from any additional trauma or injuries not even thinking about herself and how badly she was hurt. This act alone is a perfect portrayal of what an incredible little girl Nyla is. Devastatingly, her cousin died as a result of the accident. Her aunt & 12 year old cousin also died in the accident. Nyla survived this horrific experience but was terribly injured. She fractured multiple bones in her face and skull, lost sight in her left eye, and has had to endure multiple surgeries with more to come.

Nyla is such a ray of sunshine, she was always so outgoing, curious, confident and full of knowledge. As her teacher, I could always count on her to make me laugh. She always blew me away with the how much she knew about everything! After the accident, Nyla was hospitalized for two months in Indiana and during this time Nyla’s mom took time off work so she could be at her daughter’s side, take the time to mourn the loss of her family members, and attend funeral services. Nyla not only has a long road ahead of her with her physical recovery but she has so much healing to do emotionally after experiencing such devastating losses. Understandably, Nyla is struggling to come to terms with the changes to her appearance and is still mourning the loss of her family members. I know she has a long way to go but I hope gradually Nyla is able to light up rooms again with that bright smile of hers.

Hopefully in the near future Nyla will be getting a prosthetic eye. However, all of these surgeries and the extensive time Nyla has spent in the hospital is adding up financially. Nyla’s mom, Yolanda, is back in AZ working two jobs trying her hardest to make ends meet and ensure Nyla receives the best care possible. Medical bills are piling up all while both Nyla and Yolanda are having to process and work through the horrific events that have occurred. We are hoping to lighten the burden of the medical bills due to past/upcoming surgeries, extended hospital stays and medications. Please consider helping this strong, sweet girl and her Mom through this incredibly tough time. I know both Nyla & her mother, Yolanda, would be so thankful for any help they can get during this difficult time. Any contributions would be greatly appreciated.
