NY Teacher lost everything in fire
Donation protected
My roommate and I lost our apartment last night to a six-alarm fire in Brooklyn. Details of the blaze can be found here:
Gothamist - Bushwick Fire Dekalb Ave.
New York Times - Bushwick Fire Tears Through a Block of Rowhouses
PIX11 - Luke being interviewed by local media
Even though the fire started two buildings away, it was still able to destroy nearly all of our personal belongings. As a high school teacher, I am not in the financial position to recover from such a loss. Although some of my students have offered to vouch for my authenticity, I am sure the news articles and your relationship to the person who shared this page with you will suffice.
We left the house with the bare necessities: wallet, cellphone, keys. Other than that, I was wearing slippers and pajamas. My roommate was able to open her back window to give an escape route to our cats, but we had to flee before gathering much.
The fire turned out to be much more intense than we had originally thought, reaching our home and requiring 200 firefighters from around the city to get it under control. The day after the fire, they let us back into the apartment to grab the essentials.
Nearly all of our clothes, electronics, and household items had been damaged. We were able to rescue the cats, but the blaze basically took all of our material possessions.
The money will be used for purchasing clothing, food and shelter, including all basic necessities.
Due to the nature of this event, the funds are needed ASAP.
We are left without a home as the building is uninhabitable.
We did not have renters insurance, and we left the house with only the clothes on our backs. Please think of what you would do in this situation and give whatever you can to help us get back on our feet.
If you don't wish to donate money, please donate clothing, linens, shoes, toiletries, or anything else others who lost their homes could use. Extra donations will be made to the local precinct.
