NYC Marathon - 26.2 for DIFD

Stefannie Moak and Sydney Smith are running the TCS New York City Marathon on November 4th 2018 to raise funds and support for Do It For Daron (DIFD), an organization that supports education, awareness, and research initiatives at that encourage young people to talk openly about mental illness and to ask for help when needed.

Our fundraising goal is 2620; $100 for every mile of the marathon!

DIFD is an initiative we hold very close to our hearts and hope that you consider supporting us.

Donations to DIFD go on to fund some pretty amazing initiatives:

-Is It Just Me? Mental Health Education Program
-DIFD-Mach Gaensslen Chair in Suicide Prevention Research
-HealthyMinds App for dealing with stress
-BeGameReady App for young athletes' mental health
-Youth Mental Health Awareness Study & Early Intervention Research Project

DIFD funds world-leading research in suicide prevention:

Dr. Zachary Kaminsky, DIFD Mach-Gaensslen chair in suicide prevention research at The Royal’s Institute of Mental Health Research, is developing an algorithm that uses artificial intelligence to predict suicide risk based on tweets. Analysing speech patterns, the tool is proving able to predict risk early. The person writing the tweets might not even be aware of the patterns of speech that are raising flags.

Dr. Kaminsky’s laboratory also studies animal models of psychiatric conditions, side-by-side with human populations, in attempts to better understand the molecular epigenetic underpinnings of psychiatric phenotypes, and to enable the generation of true “bench to bedside” translational findings. A specific focus of the lab is the development of disease predictive biomarkers utilizing DNA methylation marks in peripheral tissues to diagnose the risk to a future mental illness. Dr. Kaminsky is actively studying epigenetic marks in relation to suicide and postpartum depression.
