The Mongol Rally
Part of participating in the Mongol Rally, is raising money for charities. One of them is picked by the organizers of the rally, Cool Earth, and the other one you pick yourself. We have chosen something close to our hearts, the UBC Global Health Initiative. The required amount to raise is £1000. However, we are looking to raise the bar and setting a goal of $4000. Any and all donations help. Thank you for contributing to our cause.
Cool Earth
Cool Earth’s focus is on the environment and it works in partnership with Indigenous communities around the world. Specifically, Cool Earth works strategically to protect rainforest that will be destroyed within the next 18 months unless intervention is undertaken. Cool Earth works with the locals near these rain forests to ensure that their best interests are maintained. You might be wondering: why do they focus on rainforests? We lose 32 million acres of rainforest every year. This equates to the same amount of CO2 as the entire global transport system: Cool Earth intends to help prevent further exacerbations to the already dangerous amounts of climate change impacting the world today.
UBC Global Health Initiative
The Global Health Initiative (GHI) is close to our hearts being an entirely student run initiative at the University of British Columbia and includes students from various faculties including Medicine, Dentistry, Arts, and Science. The main goals of the global health initiative are to improve global health education and to provide hands-on skills training for UBC students through monthly workshops. Several international health projects are run through the GHI stationed in India, Uganda, Honduras, Kenya and Canada. These international projects include improving the health of children attending school in India, collaborating with the ACCESS organization in Uganda to improve community health awareness and the education of Ugandan nursing aides in a teach-the-teacher approach, and community education and research on HIV/AIDS in Kenya.
