Uganda Study Abroad

My name is Maggie Quarles. I am a sophomore at the University of Lynchburg!

I have great news! God has provided me with an amazing opportunity to participate in a short-term mission trip with the University of Lynchburg and Community Connected.

I will be traveling to Uganda and Rwanda with classmates, teammates and local community’s leaders.   Dr. Todd Olsen, a Health Promotions professor and the women’s soccer coach at Lynchburg, will be leading the group along with Rodney Suddith and other leaders from Community Connected.   This trip will be a part of a University of Lynchburg study abroad class designed to share and teach public health information, address poverty issues, provide medical care, and teach sports clinics.  We will work with South Sudanese refugees in refugee camps in Uganda; visit Christine’s House for sexual and physically abused women in Gulu;  share and encourage a chess program in the Katwe Slum in Kampala, and conduct health workshops and soccer clinics in Rwanda.

Our trip leaders have been working with severely traumatized children, young adults, and families in Africa for over 25 years.  The leaders have provided a variety of ministry programs in five different areas: feeding, discipleship training, sports ministry, teaching, and public health.  They have also worked with physically handicapped children, visited growing villages, and share time with HIV positive adults, children, and orphans providing spiritual support and encouragement.

I am very excited about this opportunity to serve but I cannot do it alone. I would love for you to be able to share in this experience with me. First, any prayers would be greatly appreciated. This mission trip is going to be an amazing spiritual experience, but we will need prayers as we prepare to serve God and minister to His people. We will also need prayers for our financial needs to be met.

A second way that you can help and be involved is to by providing financial support.  The costs of traveling to Africa are high and each participant is required to raise his/her own funds.  Dr. Olsen is making every effort to keep the costs down by flying at special reduced group rates, staying in modest guest homes, and cutting out any travel frills.  Each team member will still be required to raise $4000 in order to travel, which is quite a challenge, but I know it is possible will God’s provision and guidance.  Would you consider supporting me and making a small donation?

I cannot make this journey by myself, nor do I want to as I would love to share it with you.  Whether you are able to contribute through prayers or financially, your support will be greatly appreciated.   Please feel free to contact me if you have questions.

I cannot wait to be a part of this great opportunity that God has shared with me.  I am excited to see how God is going to use me and excited to see what He is going to teach me on this trip!

Thank you for considering my request!

God bless!
