Nursing Aid for Haiti

In 2010 Haiti was hit with a 7.0 earthquake, which resulted in a rush of foreign aid to the nation with a focus on addressing emergent health and safety concerns. This emergency foreign aid helped to maintain key programs that addressed structural issues such as providing clean water in order to tackle the cholera epidemic that was plaguing the nation. While these efforts resulted in improvement in the health of the population, our focus now turns towards long-term clean water sustainability and the prevention and treatment of malaria.
5 years after Haiti’s catastrophic earthquake, the focus of the response has naturally shifted from addressing short-term crises to long-term needs and new challenges and priorities have emerged. The once almost eradicated disease in Haiti, malaria, is now again on the rise and has been designated as a priority target for public health programs. Current efforts are being implemented with the goal to eradicate this devastating disease by the year 2020.
Since 2000, approximately 115 students and faculty from the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHU SON) have traveled to Haiti to provide healthcare and bring hope to Haitians in need. In the past, students have gone to Haiti to screen, treat, vaccinate, and educate local groups about clean water and sanitation. Through the school's long-standing engagement with the community, sustainable change and a trusting relationship have been established. In May a new group of Hopkins nursing students will pack their bags and travel to the nation of Haiti with the aim of promoting and implementing public health initiatives that focus on the widespread issues of cholera and malaria. We kindly ask for your donation to help fund this student trip to Haiti so that we can continue this collaborative effort between JHU SON and our partners in Haiti.
