Nursing In Nepal - Volunteer Student Nurse

For those of you that know me most of this background will be common knowledge for those that don't and may have stumbled across this page firstly may I say thank you for taking the time to read this and secondly please let me take a moment to tell you a little about myself.

After spending 11 years as a communications specialist in the Royal Navy I decided that it was time for me to give back. For a long time I've always thought about becoming a nurse inspired by the compassion that was showed to family members when I was younger. Initially I explored options to transfer within the Royal Navy and become a Naval nurse however this opportunity was not afforded to me and I decided that to continue on my chosen career path I would have to take the decision to leave the military which I did earlier this year. I have recently started the first year of my nursing degree at Portsmouth University and so far it's everything I imagined it would be.

There is a once in a lifetime opportunity for a small number of student nurses to travel to less privileged areas of the world, at the end of the first year of studies, and provide health care, aid and gain valuable nursing experience in a unique and challenging setting.

The unique opportunity would allow me to travel with a small number of other students nurses to both Kathmandu and Pokhara in Nepal working in diverse overseas hospital settings looking at unfamiliar cases, inventive practices and techniques, and unique cultural attitudes towards delivering care.

During this month of volunteer work I will encounter patients with a large number of desises including diphtheria, TB, typhoid, rabies, Japanese encephalitis, dengue fever, and malnutrition.

I will also assist with community outreach programmes similar to those which I undertook during my time in the military.

Having recently become a Student Ambassador for the Royal College of Nursing the valuable experience I gain from this experience will allow me to share knowledge with me fellow student nurses.

However with all things this comes at a cost which I simply would not be able to afford on my own. The cost of the 4 week package is in excess of £4000. Having to create a GoFundMe page is something I never thought I would do for anything but this opportunity to give back is simply too great for me to pass up on.

There is no funding for this opportunity from either my university or a third part and as such it is my responsibility to come up with the funding. The money I am hoping to raise through gofundme is around 75% of the total cost and the rest I will be funding myself through part time work whilst studying.

I fully understand that everyone's purse strings are tight especially in the current climate but if you could find anyway to support me financially however big or small it would mean the world to me and I would appreciate it massively.
