A children's book project

Hello!

My name is Franco and I’m a licensed social worker in Atlanta, Georgia. Since early 2017 I have been working on writing, illustrating, and editing a 50 page children’s book called “Nuna & the Fog”.

More than a picture book, “Nuna  & the Fog” is meant to serve as guide to how to live with clinical depression. As a mental health provider, I’m very passionate about educating communities and individuals about mental health outside of clinical settings. “Nuna & the Fog” teaches readers about the symptomology of clinical depression, which is more than just feeling low. It’s having weird sleeping patterns, having angry outbursts, anxiety, having overwhelming emotions, and sometimes feeling nothing at all. The book also touches on the challenges that depression causes on our interpersonal relationships, which is perhaps the most challenging part of depression.

Most importantly, the book teaches concrete concepts and coping mechanisms based around “Acceptance and Commitment Therapy”, which is a mindfulness-based clinical intervention aiming at increasing psychological flexibility. It teaches concepts like defusion of intrusive negative thoughts, dealing with anxiety, commitment to value-based actions, self-compassion, self-love, vulnerability, and developing a strong sense of self - skills useful not just for the depressed in achieving a fufilling life.

It is my hope to raise at least $2,500 to publish and ship 200 copies and distribute it for free among libraries, daycares, community clinics, community centers, and schools in the City of Atlanta.

Thank you

100% of the money raised will be used in the production and shipping of the book.

Why a children's book?
It is a sad reality that mental health is a privilege many can't afford. By the time someone in need seeks help chances are they've struggled for years - a struggle that could be prevented if we just incorporated self care and basic education on mental health into early education as well as into our own day-to-day conversations.

There is something about children's books that communicate comfort and safety, whether its simplicity, or its cute illustrations, or perhaps the cultural value we place on them, it is my belief that they are a magnificent tool not just for kids, but for adults as well.
