Hello, my name is Shierell.
Six years ago, my dad started losing his vision to retinitis pigmentosa, which is an incurable disease where you start losing your eyesight from the peripherals inward. At first it was difficult for all of us, especially for him, because before he started losing his vision, he was the one that drove me, my two siblings and my mom every where we wanted to go. He absolutely loved to drive, but then he had to abruptly rely on others to drive for him.
As time passed, we gradually adjusted to this new lifestyle, but I could see that his vision was getting worse. He couldn't tell if someone was right beside him. He could no longer read like he used to. He once asked me if there were letters missing in an article he was reading, but I saw nothing out of place. He was heartbroken. I held on the hope that something could fix his vision, that a cure would magically appear. Nothing ever did.
That is until NuEyes, a pair of smart glasses for the visually impaired and the blind, appeared in our lives two weeks ago. My dad had the opportunity to try them out and, while he still cannot drive, he can easily read sentences in small font that he hasn't been able to read without struggle in years. I finally have hope that he can regain a little of the independence he lost before this condition started to take his eyesight away, but the cost of the glasses comes to $6000 and our insurance only covers $1000 so we need to come up with the rest of the balance by the end of the month or we may not have this opportunity again for a while.
