Nuestra Herencia: El Paseo's Senior Legacy Project

Tax deductible

“Nuestra Herencia" Legacy Film Project weaves together ten short documentary films featuring crafted portraits of ten elders from El Paseo Community Garden and their unique stories about immigration, growing, and remembering. The pandemic has been especially difficult for our elders and has highlighted the urgency to document and preserve these stories. In 2021 our team captured, transcribed, and translated 4 of the 10 initial interviews (enjoy a sample of what we accomplished above). This work began as a labor of love and respect for our fellow senior members and mentors. During this month of giving, please help us raise funds to evolve our work and include 6 more stories in 2022. El Paseo Community Garden is a 501(c)3 through NeighborSpace.

With our fundraising goal, we will compensate our amazing film team at On the Real Film and translators, as well as digitally map these stories. Once individual stories are completed in 2022, a preview of each crafted portrait will be shared as a monthly spotlight across El Paseo Community Garden’s platforms. We plan to provide an honorarium and film copy to participating elders in gratitude for sharing their stories for the film. Much time will be dedicated to each one of our elders to ensure their full story is captured, filming throughout multiple locations and several days.

This film project beautifully narrates just how meaningful our work and community-managed space is to our community. “Nuestra Herencia” is scheduled to premiere in 2022. We hope this project can serve as a pilot for a larger Pilsen neighborhood project in partnership with other community organizations. Enjoy the preview!

ABOUT THE BENEFACTOR/ FISCAL AGENT

NeighborSpace is the only nonprofit urban land trust in Chicago that preserves and sustains gardens on behalf of dedicated community groups. We shoulder the responsibilities of property ownership — such as providing basic insurance, access to water, and links to support networks — so that community groups can focus on gardening. NeighborSpace-protected gardens give young and old alike an opportunity to get their hands in the earth and enjoy nature, right in their own neighborhoods.
