Tarrant County Thanksgiving Bail Out

Donation protected
Using the model of National Bail Out Collective (NBO), "our goal is to bail out as many Black mommas and caregivers, as we can, during specific holidays in the year, beginning with Thanksgiving. The original action of bailing out Black mommas and caregivers, proposed by Mary Hooks of Southerners On New Ground, was rooted in the history of Black Liberation, where our enslaved Black ancestors used their collective resources to purchase each other’s freedom. Building on the work of those that came before, we decided that until we abolish money bail and mass incarceration, we would find ways to free ourselves," specifically in Tarrant County, Texas.

We are looking to bail out Black women for Thanksgiving 2019, to give incarcerated women an opportunity to reunite with their families. Our people need care not cages.

Why Black? Because Black people are over two times more likely to be arrested, and once arrested twice as likely to be caged before trial. We understand money bail is part of a racialized system of control. Black people ages 18-29 receive significantly higher bail amounts than all other ethnic groups and racial groups. Additionally, Black people are less likely to be released on their own recognizance than white people.

We are centering Black women because we know that the number of women incarcerated in local jails in the United States has increased 14-fold since 1970. Nearly 80% of these women in jails are mothers and most are single parents.

In many cases, like that of Kalief Browder’s, this can take years, and even when released, the psychological, financial, and social cost is never repaired. But even a few days in jail can cost someone their job, their housing, their children or, as in the case of Sandra Bland, their life.

As organizers of this bail out, we too, have been victims of the racialized criminal legal system in Tarrant County. In 2018, we were arrested and booked into the Tarrant County jail. As a family, our child, and our jobs were impacted. Our lives have not been the same since. Were it not for community efforts to bail us out, there is no telling how long we would have been in jail. We seek your help to support our efforts to help others.

(THE GOAL IS TO RAISE AS MUCH MONEY TO BAIL OUT BLACK WOMEN BY TUESDAY NOVEMBER 26TH, 2019.  THE BAIL OUT FOR THESE WOMEN WILL BE WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 27TH.)

***Please note: All funds raised will be withdrawn directly.  Then used to pay the cash bail for these women, coordinate legal support, purchase grocery gift cards for the women to purchase groceries for Thanksgiving, and pay for and provide transportation to their homes from jail.***
