Help for Bukit Lawang
Due to Covid-19 many communities, that are located in more rural areas and dependent on tourism, are suffering as they are experiencing a total loss of income, because of being locked down for months.
One of these places is Bukit Lawang. Bukit Lawang is a small town next to the rainforest of North Sumatra, Indonesia. It is the main access point to Gunung Leuser National Park the typical place, that tourists come to, in order to hike through the rainforest there and see some of the around 50.000 wild Orangutans living in this area. In 2003 Bukit Lawang was basically erased by a devastating and for many deadly flash flood that resulted from heavy rains.
Since then the town started to rebuild itself slowly with the help of tourism coming back to the area. I visited Bukit Lawang in June 2018, I did a one-week tour through Sumatra with a friend. As the infrastructure on Sumatra is not very developed, especially for tourism purposes, we chose to do a packaged tour, including a guide who was our driver at the same time. Yusuf is an incredibly lovely and humble person that made us feel comfortable throughout our whole one-week trip. He lives in Bukit Lawang with his pregnant wife and little baby son.
After Bukit Lawang being closed down for almost one month, and not receiving any help from the government, Yusuf reached out to me, as he did not know how to buy food for his family anymore. And Yusufs family is not the only one that struggles with being able to fulfill their most basic needs right now. There are many more families in the area, that struggle even more.
I want to help Yusuf and his family, but also I want to help him to help other families in town. He sent me a few videos of the situation, we need to help. As I can only do so much, I decided to put up this fund-raiser, in order to enable me to raise more money, that Yusuf then can share with other families that are struggling too.
If we could reach the goal of 500 € we could provide for about four families for an entire month. This would definitely have a great impact on these families, so even if you only have 5€ to give, it will be helpful.
