Brian Parker was diagnosed with ALS in 2011. Given two to five years to live, he has now entered his ninth year with this cruel and merciless disease. Brian is now completely paralyzed and uses a ventilator to help him breathe. Even still, he greets each day with a good sense of humor and a positive attitude. He even creates art using just his eyes to control a computer.
Brian requires 24/7 care. Due to the astronomical cost of nursing care, Jen was forced to leave her job in order to stay home to care for Brian full time. They are living off their savings, along with help from others. Many families faced with this disease literally end up going bankrupt. While Jen is able to care for Brian most of the time, she needs a break here and there. After months of going it alone, they finally found trusted home care. Home care is at least $20 per hour, with a minimum of 8 hours.
This year we're looking to raise funds to help cover:
-Additional nursing shifts (1 - 2 per week total)
-Repair to accessible van lift
-Out of pocket medical expenses (palliative visits, respiratory and feeding tube supplies, medications)
Fundraising isn't desired, but absolutely necessary as they continue to fight a beast of a disease. Please consider making a donation, and also please help us spread the word about this fundraiser and about ALS. The more people know about it, the more they will want to take action.
