2/18/2020:
John Stidoph died Tuesday night, surrounded by his family.  He will be missed greatly.  His family is spending some time together now, after taking turns being by his bedside 24/7 for the last two months.  John was never once alone in the hospital. David is in the process of scheduling his heart surgery, for early March. More updates will be coming.

2/16 Update:
I am very sorry to share the news that John will not recover from his illness.  They are keeping him comfortable and trying to delay his death until his grandmother and aunt and uncle arrive.  While John will not come home from the hospital, the bills for his care will still arrive.  David will have to have a life-saving heart surgery in the next couple of months.  There is more hardship and sorrow in the near future for the Stidophs than they could have ever imagined.  Please share this campaign with your communities.
Thanks, Julia

Update:

Just to give everyone an idea of the type of bills the Stidolphs are dealing with, just with John's care.  This year's claims completely processed as of Valentine's day.  There are 31 claims totaling $168,749.77. $151,659.17 paid, and $17,090.60 supposedly their responsibility.
The New Shebang: Two open heart surgeries--John AND David!

John Stidolph had scheduled surgery on 12/18, and was expected to be awake by 12/20. He continues to be in critical condition and has suffered many complications including, being infected with Superbugs, resistant to medications to treat his rare, aggressive blood disorder and many another surprise medical crisis.

In addition to all of these stressful events, his father David, was just told he needed a quadruple bypass within the next few weeks.
His family would welcome support with their continued unexpected medical expenses.  Any funds donated over the amount of their medical bills would be donated to Small Middle School Counseling Department and SCORES class.

The Short Shebang:

John Stidolph had a scheduled surgery on 12/18, and was expected to be awake by 12/20, enjoy Christmas with his family, and be home by New Years.  Instead, 3 weeks later, he is still in critical condition recovering from surgical complications, unconscious, and has been diagnosed with a rare, aggressive blood disorder.  His family would welcome support with their unexpected medical expenses.   His family would welcome support with their unexpected medical expenses.  Any funds donated over the amount of their medical bills would be donated to Small Middle School Counseling Department and SCORES class.

The Whole Shebang:
John Stidolph had scheduled open-heart surgery on Wednesday, 12-18, for a congenital heart defect.  Unfortunately, that was the last thing to go as planned.  Due to complications, it turned out to be over 12 hours, his blood pressure remained very low, and he had a high fever ranging from 105 F to 107 F from 12/19 to 1/8.

Over the last couple of weeks, John's status has gotten progressively worse.  The high-pressure settings that were required on his ventilator have damaged his lungs, and one had collapsed.   They proceeded to do a second high-risk surgery, they gave him a blood bypass line in his neck, called an ECMO, to provide direct blood oxygenation to let his lungs heal, and dialysis to support his non-functioning kidneys.  They also did a bone marrow biopsy to try to find out why his fever continued and his health continued to worsen despite all possible interventions.  Throughout this entire time, he has had to be kept sedated and has not regained consciousness.

On 1/7, the doctors found out the reason for John's worsening conditions and the news was not good. John has developed a rare condition called HLH. It is a disorder of a specific kind of white blood cells, called histiocytes, causing them to go into a positive feedback loop and begin attacking healthy tissues.  This is an aggressive disease, and the prognosis in a person who does not have John's other medical challenges is about 50/50. The doctors are starting him on a strong dose of steroids immediately, he will begin also receiving a cancer drug. If he does not show any progress in 4 to 7 days, they will add a second cancer drug.

His parents, David and Rebecca, and his siblings Kenneth and Kelley have taken turns being with him around the clock.  They continue to keep an incredibly positive and trust that the rest is in God's hands, and in the hands of the highly knowledgeable, caring nurses, staff, and doctors who have surrounded John since the moment he set foot into Dell children's hospital.
