Northgate Elem. Raised Garden Beds

Each spring, Ms. Any Kopiloff leads her 2nd grade class at Northgate Elementary in Seattle, WA with science lessons around preparing, planting and cultivating 4 gardens of fruits and vegetables. The students in her class look forward to this project each year. My son is in her class and mentioned that they might not be able to continue with this due to the current state of the raised garden beds. Unfortunately, all have rotted and need to be replaced. One has no remaining wood around it and can't be used as it was a hazard to students. The other three are quickly decaying and need to be replaced. After confirming with Ms. Kopiloff, all beds should be replaced and preferably by the end of February  in time for the students to start planting in March. I'm starting this campaign in an effort to replace all of the beds so that this lesson can continue for the students for years to come. 

Northgate is a small community of around 300 students located in North Seattle. The diversity of students and dedicated teachers makes this school a wonderful, inclusive community. Of the students: 74% are on Free/Reduced Lunches, 39% are English Language Learners and 28% are Homeless. Though the school has recently developed a small but mighty PTO, funds remain limited and it is necessary to reach out to the greater community to help raise funds for projects. 

Materials needed:
* 4'x6x8' smooth pieces of PT/exterior wood or comparable 2'X4X10 (we are finalizing design of the beds) - the largest cost, approx $800
* Screws
* 6mm Plastic 
*Fresh dirt 

Any leftover funds from the project will be donated to the garden project to purchase tools, seeds and other items for the students to engage and learn with the project.
