North Umpqua Community

Donation protected

Archie creek fire, Star Mountain fire, and French creek fires have taken a devastating toll on the North Umpqua watershed and the people who call it home.

These fires have taken over 20 miles of the river corridor and many of our rivers greatest stewards have now lost there homes.

We are attempting to raise money to put back into the community directly. For those that call this river home and have lost their living space and possessions in the devastation.

Our dear friend Mike Schmorde, the gracious host of Bogus Creek, is just one of many examples.  When the fires started, Mike was away from Bogus campground enjoying his day off with a friend down river in Glide. Mike didn’t have a chance as the Archie creek fire swallowed bogus up along with over 15000 acres in the first few hours. Mike is now starting over at the age of 71, with nothing more than his old Nissan truck and a couple of T-shirts. His employment (as campground host) also remains questionable at this time.

Mike is very well known and liked on the river. Mikes gentle spirit and positive, simplistic take on life spreads rapidly amongst those around him. Mikes knowledge of the land is surpassed by nobody. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of eating his famous blackened Steelhead, you know that Mike is the real deal and a soul the North cannot be without.

We also need to mention the Moore’s.

Frank Moore is not only a decorated and honored WWII vet; Frank has done more for the Umpqua watershed hands down than possibly any one person has ever done to protect waters on Earth.  Here’s a very recent and inspiring article. https://www.nrtoday.com/news/environment/wildfires/frank-and-jeanne-moore-dont-know-yet-what-theyve-lost-to-the-fire-but-have/article_e4b68bd7-fb2b-50f6-98f8-5d0471bb7b53.html

Frank and his wife Jeanne have since been updated that their historic log home has burned entirely. located just a few miles west of the Archie Creek Fire epicenter, atop Moore Hill lane.

We are the new hand of the river, and we owe everything we have experienced to the old hand.

They have graciously brought us into their community, and now it is our time to do our part.

We will be auctioning flies and whatever else we can to generate funds for these great people.

When the road is open we will be up there doing our part in anyway to help bring the community back to health.
