Like most charities around the UK, North East Dementia Care is feeling the financial strains from closing our doors due to COVID-19. As a newly formed Dementia Charity in Sunderland, since the closure of the Alzheimer's Society, we aim to help, support and care for people affected with dementia and their families in the Sunderland area.

We provide a range of care and support from 1 to 1 to singing for the brain and much much more. We know our community are missing us and we are missing them. Here is what our some of our families have to say;

"Martin has settled well and is more than amenable to go.  The staff which pick him up are always pleasant and encouraging and offer him support.  Martin appears to have forged relationships with both staff and Centre users and appears to enjoy his time at the Centre.

Prior to attending I had tried to get him to attend groups etc at other venues but he would flatly refuse to go.  However since introducing him to NEDC he has obviously felt comfortable and is happy to attend.  This Centre gives Martin structure, support and activities which I am unable to offer at home.

The other side to this is that I am able to have some time to myself to enable me to do activities which has not been afforded to me for such a long time.  I was anxious at first but as I can see Martin is happy and content to attend it has given me assurances that this is the right place for him.  I am able to recharge my batteries and look forward to Martin coming home at the end of his day.

This is not just any centre it is specialist in dementia care and offers personal care which is an added bonus for me knowing that Martin is being looked after and his needs are being met.  Likewise support is offered to myself if I need it which is very reassuring.

Thanks again for your continued support of Martin and myself."

"Dad is 95 years young and was diagnosed with Dementia approximately 4 years ago. He had been attending 2 lunch clubs (at Age UK - not Dementia Clubs) for a number of years but unfortunately his behaviour deteriorated to a level where we were informed they could no longer accommodate him, with immediate effect. We were devastated.

We then found out about North East Dementia Care - what a lifeline. I spoke and met with Sandra at your centre, which had a lovely warm welcome feel. Sandra answered all my concerns (and held my hand when I got upset) I was introduced to Heather who also explained the work that you do and I was invited into the day lounge to see the carers with your members. What a lovely, caring atmosphere with plenty of activities taking place - it felt like home.

Sandra and Heather were both extremely understanding and very sympathetic to the situation we found ourselves in and offered advice and guidance.

Dad started attending the week after and loves going (so much so he is happy to go for 2 days now). At the time it was very difficult for all our family and so upsetting. Following a couple of issues and concerns I then spoke to Karen who has been tremendous providing support and care at any time day, night or weekends - I don't know what I would have done without having her to talk to.

The care, compassion, respect and treatment that has been shown toward dad and ourselves goes beyond words.

Dementia is an illness and anyone, and their families, living with this need care and support yet, there is nothing available in our area. Anyone who hasn't come across this illness has no idea how difficult, upsetting and frustrating it is to try and seek help."
