Hate crimes have always existed.
Hate crimes have many costs.
In West Fargo 2014, a father of five was viciously attacked while driving a couple home in his taxi. He was attempting to protect the woman from what she believed to be a threat on her life from her male partner. The driver was hit and had his nose bit off by the assailant. As the attack took place, the driver was berated with racial epithets.
Just this month, another young father, husband, and gainfully employed man was brutally assaulted by two attackers as he was moving his furniture into his apartment. The two attackers again called him racially charged names, knocked him unconscious, and choked him while on the ground. The victim's friend and brother believe he would have been killed had they not intervened.
Both victims were of Somali background.
Both victims have had their lives unalterably changed by the incidents.
Both victims incurred costs because of the attacks that will not be addressed by the assailants or the justice system.
In the 2014 case, the assailant was determined to be suffering from PTSD and placed in a mental health facility and was not charged in the case.
In the recent case, one assailant pled guilty to simple assault, was fined $250 and released. The other assailant has not yet gone to trial
The cab driver has undergone extensive surgery, was unable to work for months upon months and even now is unable to work when the weather gets cold. His plan to purchase a home has disappeared as he lost his earning capacity, spent his savings on supporting his family and now stands to be evicted along with his seven family members.
The other gentleman has incurred costs of the ambulance trip, the time in the emergency room, lost wages and a destroyed cell phone.
They as do many victims of hate feel isolated, fearful of such random and hateful acts and betrayed by the communities in which they have made their homes.
Donate now to let these men and their families know that they are supported by their communities. We cannot return them to a time when they could believe they are living in a land of safety and security. But, through our financial support, we can assure them that they are not left alone in their time of need.
Monies raised through this fund will be distributed based on identified needs of hate crime victims. A committee of three participating organizations: North Dakota Human Rights Coalition, Afro-American Development Association, and High Plains Fair Housing will use established criteria to distribute the donations. Monies received over the amount received for these victims will go into accounts for victims in the future who suffer personal financial setbacks as a result of hate crimes.
Goal of this fundraising: $200,000.
