Non-Viable Candidate Book

My name is Trish Causey. I have been an activist since I was 13 years old. I have raised money for the local women's rape crisis center and worked for the ACLU of Mississippi after Katrina. I have advocated for local fire departments when local mayors and city councils cut budgets, equipment, and pay. I am a staunch activist for women, women's rights, LGBT rights, and other human rights issues.

In 2014, I naively went from being an activist to a Congressional candidate for Mississippi's 4th district, thinking my passion for activism for the people would be enough on my end. I knew it would be a hard road being an openly progressive liberal Democrat who is also a bisexual, non-Christian, single mom in Mississippi. I ran as a Democrat because I am a Democrat, and I believed I embodied the social justice and social awareness platform of the Democratic Party.

I expected it to be difficult -- to get flack from Republicans for being non-Christian or a single mom. I did not expect the lack of help from the Democratic party in Mississippi or the rejection from national and regional so-called rights groups who practically laughed at the idea of supporting a progressive candidate in Mississippi. They were only interested in candidates that met some invisible requirements that proved viability in the election. I felt completely alone.

What I discovered along the way was just how broken the political system is in Mississippi, and why Mississippi will never have progressive leadership as long as the laws are skewed to keep the system broken and the Democrats are content with their trademark apathy.

In writing "Non-Viable Candidate", I hope to shed some light on these issues which extend beyond just the election and affect every one of us on a daily basis. Not just Mississippians, but all Americans. As long as GOP/Tea Party politicians are sitting in office, expect more abuses of power, more violations of women's rights to body autonomy and equal pay, more legal discimination, and more threats to education, social security, Medicare/Medicaid, a living wage, veterans' issues, and immigration reform, to name a few.

I plan to launch the book in 2016. If possible, I'd like to release it by November.
